\r\nUranium has been found in well water near Juliette, Georgia,\r\nbut tests by several different groups of researchers differ on\r\nwhether it might be related to nearby coal ash from Plant Scherer.\r\nThe same coal ash ponds near which\r\n\r\nsome people are getting cancer from uranium in their well water<\/a>.\r\nCoal ash like\r\nwe have in Veolia landfill in Lowndes County<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nMany Juliette residents have expressed concern that a coal ash pond\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nat Plant Scherer, one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the\r\ncountry, might be causing the problem. Georgia Power is majority\r\nowner and operator of the plant and its 750-acre, unlined pond\r\nfilled with coal ash slurry, which can contain heavy metals such as\r\nuranium….\r\n

Since then, water samples tested by the Environmental\r\nProtection Agency, as well as a smaller group of samples tested by a\r\ngroup of University of Georgia graduate students, showed no pattern\r\nof contamination that could be clearly linked to groundwater flow\r\nfrom the coal ash pond. The samples were taken last year, but in\r\nsome cases it took months for the samples to be analyzed….\r\n

\r\n On the\r\nother hand,\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n the EPA test results showed many wells that were not\r\nbetween the pond and the river — including some wells west of\r\nInterstates 75 and 475, in the opposite direction and far southwest\r\nof the plant — were heavily contaminated with uranium, radium\r\nand related radioactive particles….\r\n

\r\n The EPA lab results showed\r\nthat of the 45 samples, 28 had either uranium, radium or\r\n“gross alpha” levels that exceeded safe limits. Some of\r\nthese were only slightly high, while nine were very high in all\r\nthree categories.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nMeanwhile, UGA students tested wells near the coal ash ponds\r\nand found no significant contamination.\r\nSo results are inconclusive as to the source of the uranium, but it’s coming from somewhere, and people are getting sick from it.\r\nThere’s more in\r\nthe article<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
