\nThat’s why we allow anonymous comments on this blog: occasionally one\nprovides useful information. Now riddle me this: why did the county\nleave the citizens to guess about Veolia and\nAdvanced Disposal Services\nof Central Alabama, Inc.?\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nAnd for that matter, Veolia is based out of Jacksonville, Florida\nand its purchaser is based in Alabama,\nand is in turn owned by\n\nHighstar Capital of New York City and Houston, Texas?<\/a>\nWhy is granting a cheap monopoly to an out-of-state company\nmore important than either letting local companies compete for the service\nor having the county continue to provide a public service directly\nto its taxpayers and citizens?\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\n\nAdvanced Disposal Services, Inc.,<\/a> has completed its acquisition of\nVeolia ES Solid Waste Inc.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Jacksonville, Fla.-based company announced the closing of the\n$1.9 billion transaction just before 2 p.m. today.\n<\/p>\n

\nNews of the closing came just days after the Justice Department told\nAdvanced Disposal that it would need to sell off three transfer\nstations in northern New Jersey, a landfill and two transfer\nstations in central Georgia, and three commercial waste collection\nroutes in the Macon, Ga., area to pass anti-trust muster.\n<\/p>\n

\n\nHighstar Capital<\/a> \u2014 the owner of Advanced Disposal and\nInterstate Waste Services Inc. \u2014 emerged in July as the winner\nin the bidding war for Veolia ES Solid Waste Inc. When the purchased\nwas announced, Highstar said the three companies would merge into a\none, which would operate under the Advanced name. Advanced Disposal\ntook control of Interstate Waste in September.\n<\/p>\n

\nNow that the deal is complete, the “new” Advanced Disposal becomes\nthe largest privately owned waste company in North America with an\nestimated $1.4 billion in annual revenue and more than 3,000\ncollection vehicles doing work in 20 states.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nSo the Lowndes County Commission wants to grant a monopoly to\nwhat used to be a company so large it had to divest parts to\navoid anti-trust actions, and now is part of\n“the largest privately owned waste company in North America.”\nHow does that help local business in Lowndes County, Georgia?\n<\/p>\n
