{"id":28,"date":"2013-03-16T09:08:16","date_gmt":"2013-03-16T13:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/suwannee-county-sinkholes-wctv.html"},"modified":"2013-04-08T22:47:04","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T02:47:04","slug":"suwannee-county-sinkholes-wctv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/suwannee-county-sinkholes-wctv.html","title":{"rendered":"Suwannee County sinkholes &mdash;WCTV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/wswg\/home\/headlines\/Jaw_Dropping_Sinkhole_Opens_In_Farmers_Field_162023615.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d08970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d08970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\r\nSinkholes in\r\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/sinkholes-in-florida-and-in-lowndes-county-georgia.html\">\r\nSeffner<\/a>, <a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/florida-sink-hole-evicts-church.html\">Fort Myers<\/a>,\r\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/03\/tallahassee-sinkhole.html\">Tallahassee<\/a>,\r\nand now even closer.\r\nFollow the Withlacoochee River south to the Suwannee River,\r\nand two counties south of us in Suwannee County, Florida,\r\nthey&#8217;ve got dozens of sinkholes,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/news\/headlines\/Jaw_Dropping_Sinkhole_Opens_In_Farmers_Field_162023615.html\">\r\none of them massive<\/a>, with another one this month,\r\nincluding apparently a cavern under some yards.\r\nThis is in the same Floridan Aquifer that underlies Lowndes County,\r\nwhere we had\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.walb.com\/story\/13425198\/sinkhole-opens-in-lowndes-co\">\r\na road drop into a sinkhole three years ago<\/a>\r\nand sinkholes were discovered under a man&#8217;s garage and yard last year.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nGreg Gullberg 4 March 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/news\/headlines\/The-Science-Behind-Sinkholes-195172891.html\">\r\nThe Science Behind Sinkholes<\/a>,\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nMikell Cook says he and his neighbors have learned more about\r\nGeology than they ever cared to since last summer when Tropical\r\nStorm Debby swept through much of Florida leaving Live Oak and\r\nsurrounding areas peppered with sinkholes.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nHe and his neighbors live in the town of McAlpin, where\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wctv.tv\/news\/headlines\/The-Science-Behind-Sinkholes-195172891.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d0f970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d0f970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\r\njust his\r\nproperty and the one next to it play host to more than 60 sinkholes\r\nincluding one massive one, known as the McAlpin Grand Canyon.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd more than half a year later it continues, another one just\r\nopened up Thursday. These neighbors believe there&#8217;s a whole cavern\r\nunder their yards they didn&#8217;t know about until Debby.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;What&#8217;s so scary about it is you never know when they&#8217;re going to\r\nbreak out, how big they&#8217;re going to be and how devastating they&#8217;re\r\ngoing to be,&#8221; said Mikell Cook.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nUnlike some reporters farther south, Greg Gullberg knows there are\r\ncauses for sinkholes:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSinkholes can be triggered by heavy rainfall, heavy drought and\r\nexcessive pumping of groundwater. Homeowners should look for warning\r\nsigns.
