Bussing, Ph.D., former mayor of Gainesville, Florida, is among the\nnumerous signatories of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salemsafe.org\/biomass67.html\">\nLetter to the U.S. Senate from Environmental Groups (including SAFE) Regarding Biomass<\/a>, which says in part:\n<blockquote>\nWhen compared to coal, per megawatt, this burning [biomass and the like] emits 1.5 times the carbon dioxide (CO2), 1.5 times the carbon monoxide (CO, a toxic air pollutant), and as much particulate matter.\n<\/blockquote>\nGeorgia already has the country&#8217;s dirtiest coal plant, at Juliette, near Macon.\nDo we need still more CO2?\n<p>\nMaybe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walb.com\/Global\/story.asp?S=11144783\">\nthe Wiregrass biomass plant planned for Valdosta<\/a> is somehow more efficient than the one\nnear Gainesville.\nIf so, it would be good to hear about that; I don&#8217;t recall the topic coming up\nat the Lowndes County Commission meeting in which this plant was approved.\n<p>\nDr. Bussing elaborated in a recent letter:\n<blockquote>\nThe fallacy is in believing that plants take up all\nCO2 emissions. In fact plants absorb some, the\nocean absorbs more (and as a consequence is\nbecoming more acidic by the year), but a\nportion just stays and builds up in the\natmosphere. That buildup is associated with\nglobal warming, and it doesn&#8217;t matter if the\nCO2 comes from coal, gas or biomass.\n<\/blockquote>\nThanks to Seth R.
