ACC is part of a group of Texas community colleges that have\napplied for $3.5 million in funding to build solar-energy training\nprograms.\n<\/blockquote>\nEducation, solar, weatherization; who could argue with those things?\n<p>\nBut do those functions create new jobs?\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nWhat these entities have discovered so far is that green jobs won\u2019t\nlikely come in the form of new occupations, but rather a new shade of\ngreen for existing ones. Roofers, plumbers, HVAC repairmen, electricians,\nand others will likely have to learn new skills and earn certifications\nthat will position them for tomorrow\u2019s jobs.\n<p>\n\u201cWe really view it as a greening of existing jobs, which will require\npeople to develop new skills,\u201d said B.J. Stanbery, chairman of the\nTexas Foundation for Innovative Communities and chief strategy officer\nand chairman of HelioVolt Corp. \u201cFor many people, this is a long-term\nretraining effort.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nSo in addition to refitting existing buildings, just build them\ngreen in the first place.\n<blockquote>\nStanbery of the Texas Foundation for Innovative Communities agrees that\nAustin\u2019s workforce training resources will help draw green industries\nto the area.\n<p>\n\u201cAs we train people, it removes the risk to new business coming into\nthe market to know they won\u2019t have to import talent and the people that\nare here are already networked with local businesses,\u201d Stanbery said.\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, green training could draw in green industries.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Green money is pouring into Austin, Texas, which now has to decide how to spend it.
