<\/a>\nattention another opportunity for improvement. Lowndes\nCounty has a \nThoroughfare Plan<\/a> whose author says it\n\n"works as a guide for development and potential use\nchanges in property."<\/a> This is the same purpose as the\nComprehensive Plan, so it should be of interest to the\nPlanning Commission.<\/p>\nThe county lets contracts for\nroad work based on the Thoroughfare Plan, and as the county\nsays, once a road is paved or widened, it can support denser\nuse. Some of this road work is in areas\n\n\nwhich the\nComprehensive Plan shows as for agricultural and forestry,\nnot development, so there appears to be a conflict here\nbetween the two plans, and thus an opportunity for the\nPlanning Commission to resolve any such conflicts.<\/p>\n
The recent update to the\nThoroughfare Plan reclassifies numerous county roads to\nsupport more traffic and thus more development. While that\nplan includes tables of criteria for road classifications,\nit says up front that roads may not meet the criteria, and\nin many cases they do not, so it is not clear for what\npurpose roads are being reclassified. This is another\nopportunity for improvement by the Planning Commission.<\/p>\n
It is not clear whether the\nCounty’s Thoroughfare Plan meshes with\nValdosta’s Transportation Plan, or with those of other\nmunicipalities in the county. The Planning Commission is\nwell-placed to determine that, and to resolve any mismatches.<\/p>\n
In general, while there is\nlittle if any process in place for input to the\nCounty’s Thoroughfare Plan, the Planning Commission\nhas well-tested processes for input that can be applied, to\neveryone’s benefit.<\/p>\n
