Couldn&#8217;t do that.<\/p>\n<p>\nYou designed a mile and a half straight-away, and they have come.<br \/>\nWelcome to the Quarterman Road Drag Strip!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She took pictures.<br \/>\nShe called 911, and they caught one of the dragsters.<br \/>\nNeighborhood Watch in action.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Commission responds by looking at County Engineer Mike Fletcher:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<object width=\"320\" height=\"265\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Jb8cJcXba8U&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Jb8cJcXba8U&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>\nFletcher says they&#8217;ve sent a request to the Georgia State Patrol to<br \/>\nask for radar enforcement on Quarterman Road.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s a good idea, but also very interesting, considering all the times<br \/>\nthey told us they couldn&#8217;t do that, because the design speed is higher<br \/>\nthan the posted speed limit.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd speed humps?<\/p>\n<p>\n<object width=\"320\" height=\"265\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vdUMthcsPN4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vdUMthcsPN4&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"320\" height=\"265\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>\nChairman Ashley Paulk still says they can&#8217;t do that because of &#8220;mercy vehicles.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Anybody else?&#8221; he added, perfunctorily.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rashidburney.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/and-thenthere-were-speed-bumps_07.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_jTQzXLi2Sd0\/SvYfjPAumkI\/AAAAAAAABx8\/AHjYJ0VBVx8\/s320\/IMG_3055.JPG\"><\/a><br \/>\nYet<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.portlandonline.com\/Transportation\/index.cfm?a=83939&#038;c=38764\"><br \/>\nPortland, Oregon<\/a> does it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newhavensafestreets.org\/2009\/09\/four-speed-humps-replace-choker-in-fair.html\"><br \/>\nNew Haven, Connecticut,<\/a> does it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rashidburney.blogspot.com\/2009\/11\/and-thenthere-were-speed-bumps_07.html\"><br \/>\nPlainfield, New Jersey<\/a> does it.<br \/>\nNumerous counties in Georgia do it, as a 10 second google search reveals.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd no, a 35 MPH posted speed limit is not an impediment to installing these impediments.<br \/>\nMost of these examples are of speed humps intended to bring speeds down<br \/>\nto 35 MPH.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhy is Lowndes County backwards, to use one of Commissioner Lee&#8217;s favorite words?<\/p>\n<p>\nWe were told Quarterman Road was being paved for safety.<br \/>\nCommissioner Richard Lee, who earlier insisted on paving Quarterman Road<br \/>\nfor that reason,<br \/>\nsilently shuffled papers in response to Carolyn Selby&#8217;s pictures of drag racers.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen will the County Commission do something about this safety on Quarterman Road?<br \/>\nWill this take until mercy vehicles have to be called after somebody is run over by a drag racer?<\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, there were other citizens wishing to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>\nGretchen Quarterman wanted to know if the county would hold<br \/>\na local government 101 session <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/local_story_031224658.html\"><br \/>\nlike Valdosta is doing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nChairman Paulk joked that maybe she would like Valdosta to annex Quarterman Road.<br \/>\nShe responded that no, she&#8217;d just like something done about safety.<\/p>\n<p>\nCounty Manager Joe Pritchard said he and County Clerk Paige Dukes<br \/>\nwere working on something on county government that they would show to the<br \/>\nCommission soon.<\/p>\n<p>\nJohn S.
