{"id":2680,"date":"2010-07-07T11:55:49","date_gmt":"2010-07-07T15:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/07\/solar-power-and-georgia-power.html"},"modified":"2010-07-07T11:55:49","modified_gmt":"2010-07-07T15:55:49","slug":"solar-power-and-georgia-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/07\/solar-power-and-georgia-power.html","title":{"rendered":"Solar Power and Georgia Power"},"content":{"rendered":"As we&#8217;ve seen, the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/07\/center-of-innovation---energy.html\">Center of Innovation &#8211; Energy<\/a>\ndefines solar as a southwestern energy source (see slide 9).\nThat slide uses a version of this map:\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/spotlightsolar\/solar_potential.asp\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\"  src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/spotlightsolar\/images\/daily_solar_energy.gif\"><\/a>\n<p>\nI found that map on Georgia Power&#8217;s web pages.\nMeanwhile, here are\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/spotlightsolar\/solar_projects.asp\">\nGeorgia Power Solar Projects<\/a>.\nHm, &#8220;a rooftop solar demonstration program&#8221;, &#8220;plans to install solar panels at schools in each of the company&#8217;s regions&#8221;, &#8220;showcase its technology&#8221;.\nWhere&#8217;s the actual rapid deployment?\n<p>\nMeanwhile,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/02\/encouraging-new-energy-production-via-solar.html\">\nTexas almost doubled its renewable energy generation between 2004 and 2006<\/a>\nand hasn&#8217;t stopped since.\n\n<!--more-->\nIf it works in east and central Texas, it will work in south Georgia, which is\nat the same latitudes and receives the same amounts of solar energy.\nSee the above map on Georgia Power&#8217;s own web pages\nor go to the source of those maps, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/gis\/solar.html\">\nNREL, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.<\/a>\nOr if\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seco.cpa.state.tx.us\/Maps\/re_maps-solar-location.html\">\nit works in north Texas at DFW:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Texas Utilities solar collectors located at the Dallas\/Fort Worth\nInternational Airport produce about 100,000 kilowatts a year&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nIf it works at DFW, it would work at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.\n<p>\nThe Georgia state legislature has actually been remarkably forward-thinking\non this, passing a 35% renewable energy tax rebate a couple years ago,\nadding to the 30% federal tax rebate, and even before that passing a law\nthat requires power companies to connect local renewable energy production\nto the grid.\n<p>\nBut there&#8217;s no attention by the rest of the state government or\nby the power companies (of which Georgia Power is the biggest)\nto actually deploy solar.\n<p>\nAs Georgia Power&#8217;s own web page says:\n<blockquote>\n&#8230;insolation values in Georgia are significant enough to support solar energy systems in our state, with the southern two-thirds of Georgia having equivalent solar insolation values to most of the state of Florida.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2009\/10\/florida-gets-smart-about-solar.html\">\nFlorida has the largest solar plant in the country.<\/a>\nAnd Florida\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2009\/11\/longterm-local-jobs-that-cannot-be-exported-solar-installation.html\">\nis busily working up solar installation jobs.<\/a>\nWe could, too.\n<p>\nIf the state won&#8217;t lead, maybe Lowndes County should.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As we&#8217;ve seen, the Center of Innovation &#8211; Energy defines solar as a southwestern energy source (see slide 9).
