{"id":2653,"date":"2010-08-30T17:20:28","date_gmt":"2010-08-30T21:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/08\/dr-william-sammons-on-biomass-sustainability-and-economics.html"},"modified":"2010-08-30T17:20:28","modified_gmt":"2010-08-30T21:20:28","slug":"dr-william-sammons-on-biomass-sustainability-and-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/08\/dr-william-sammons-on-biomass-sustainability-and-economics.html","title":{"rendered":"Dr. William Sammons on Biomass Sustainability and Economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/11453217\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/ats.vimeo.com\/628\/690\/62869013_100.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s an interesting<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/11453217\">video interview<\/a><br \/>\nwith Dr. William Sammons,<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/06\/nix-on-biomass-plant-in-traverse-city-michigan.html\"><br \/>\nthe doctor who spoke in Traverse City just before that biomass plant was nixed.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIs it more important to reach the target &#8230; or to say we have new information<br \/>\nand we need to revise the targets and what qualifies?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He&#8217;s talking<br \/>\nabout potential billions of dollars of health costs from particulates,<br \/>\nabout<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/06\/whole-trees-as-biomass.html\"><br \/>\n&#8220;waste&#8221; wood (what they say they will burn) vs. whole trees (what they end up burning),<\/a><br \/>\nand most importantly about sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>\nBiomass plants don&#8217;t have to report their CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions,<br \/>\nso <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/08\/proposed-biomass-plants.html\">if all the proposed biomass plants get built<\/a><br \/>\nwe&#8217;re talking about as much as 800 million tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub> from<br \/>\nbiomass plants by 2020, 12 to 14% of total CO<sub>2<\/sub><br \/>\nemissions for the U.S. (not just power emissions: total national emissions).<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/06\/biomass-and-carbon-dioxide.html\"><br \/>\nTrees don&#8217;t grow fast enough<\/a> to suck all that back out of the air in ten years.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\nHe also gets into the economics of how biomass has gotten piggy-backed<br \/>\non top of wind and solar as a renewable energy source,<br \/>\nleading to a grant gold rush for biomass proponents to<br \/>\nbuild it and flip it.<\/p>\n<p>\nYou could apply the same economics to a solar plant, with less<br \/>\npermit red tape, and zero particulate emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\nInstead of spending $100 billion of taxpayer money in the<br \/>\nnext five year supporting biomass, why not spend it in<br \/>\nretrofitting houses, deploying an electrical smart grid,<br \/>\nand installing solar and wind.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/08\/proposed-solar-plants.html\"><br \/>\nHere in south Georgia, if we used distributed solar like<br \/>\nthey do in Austin, Texas,<\/a> we wouldn&#8217;t even need to revise<br \/>\nthe grid first.<br \/>\nAnd for jobs, how about <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/03\/the-jobs-are-in-the-trees-reforestation.html\">reforestation,<br \/>\nwhich produces twice as many jobs as biomass?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nWhere is the <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/07\/center-of-innovation---energy.html\">state renewable energy plan for Georgia<\/a><br \/>\nthat takes all these factors into account?<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting video interview with Dr. William Sammons, the doctor who spoke in Traverse City just before that biomass plant was nixed.
