We meet with Air\nForce officials at the Pentagon annually and ask them, &#8220;What else\ncan our community do to protect MAFB from the next BRAC?&#8221; The\nanswer, every year: prevent encroachment, and the best way to do\nthat is by protecting the Military Activity Zone (MAZ).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nToday\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/videos-lcc-2012-12-10.html\">\n(Tuesday, Dec. 11) at the Lowndes County Board of\nCommissioners meeting<\/a> there are two agenda items that could put\nMoody at risk.\n<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostachamber.com\/board-of-directors.htm\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c34842a62970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c34842a62970b-pi.png\"    \/><\/a>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/rezoning-near-moody-fire-code-would-prohibit-a-single-entrance-lcc-2012-12-10-lcc-2012-12-10.html\">\nSpot zoning for a proposed densely settled subdivision in the MAZ<\/a>\nis an invitation to other developments and inherently sets a precedent.\nIt&#8217;s a very slippery slope. How will the County tell the next one\n&#8220;no&#8221;?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe second agenda item would\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/glimmers-of-open-discussion-about-moody-afb-zoning-by-the-county-commission-lcc-2012-12-10.html\">\nchange the zoning ordinance<\/a>\nto allow even more densely settled neighborhoods in the MAZ.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOne of the reasons we&#8217;ve been able to keep MAFB here\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\nfor more than\n70 years is because MAFB can be utilized for a number of types of\nmissions, largely because of the protected activity zone. Both\nagenda items, if passed, could increase encroachment into the MAZ\nand could very well limit MAFB&#8217;s future mission possibilities.\n<p>\nAnother Georgia community (Warner Robins)\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/houston-county-and-georgia-buying-houses-in-warner-robins-afb-encroachment-zone.html\">\nis actually using taxpayer dollars<\/a>\nto buy back residential properties in\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/houston-county-has-exclusion-zones-around-warner-robins-afb-like-the-lowndes-county-maz.html\">\ntheir military activity zones<\/a>\nas a result of their failure to prevent encroachment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny this subdivision,\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/developer-didnt-get-his-way-change-the-zoning-code-glpc-2012-11-26.html\">\nto deny the proposed changes to the MAZ<\/a> that would allow more\ndense residential development. The County Commission should vote to\ndeny, too.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/chamber-opposes-zoning-code-change-for-developer-near-moody.html\">\nChamber&#8217;s GAC Executive Committee<\/a> voted unanimously to oppose\nactions that allow encroachment and weaken the MAZ. The Chamber\nencourages our members to contact our County Commission members to\nlet them know how you feel about protecting MAFB.
