\nSolar power can bring for energy independence, not just from foreign countries,\nalso from the grid during storms and other outages.\n<\/p>\n

\nInspired by the need to deal with downed power lines\nin New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy,\nDavid Crane and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote for NYTimes 12 Dec 2012,\n\nSolar Panels for Every Home<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n

\n

\nSolar photovoltaic technology can significantly reduce our reliance\n\n<\/a>\non fossil fuels and our dependence on the grid.\nElectricity-producing photovoltaic panels installed on houses, on\nthe roofs of warehouses and big box stores and over parking lots can\nbe wired so that they deliver power when the grid fails.\n<\/p>\n

\nSolar panels have dropped in price by 80 percent in the past five\nyears and can provide electricity at a cost that is at or below the\ncurrent retail cost of grid power in 20 states, including many of\nthe Northeast states. So why isn’t there more of a push for this\nclean, affordable, safe and inexhaustible source of electricity?\n<\/p>\n

\nFirst, the investor-owned utilities that depend on the existing\nsystem for their profits have little economic interest in promoting\na technology that empowers customers to generate their own power.\nSecond, state regulatory agencies and local governments impose\nburdensome permitting and siting requirements that unnecessarily\nraise installation costs.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nI can tell you by experience that solar panels on the roof\n(with batteries) can supply power when the grid is out.\n<\/p>\n

\nIn regulatory-captured Georgia, the big impediment to solar is\n\nfinancing, because of 1973 Territorial Electric Service Act.<\/a>\nWhen will Southern Company and Georgia Power admit their boondoogle\non the Savannah River has failed and get on with conservation,\nefficiency, wind, and solar power?\n<\/p>\n
