\nSammons was meticulous in pointing out where his data came from citing\nscientific studies and journals and even the Environmental Protection\nAgency, along with health organizations like the American Cancer Society\nand the American Lung Association.\n\n\n
<\/a>\nThe people who approve the plant and the people who own the biomass plant\nwill not being paying the medical bills in the future, Sammons said,\ncommunity members and their children will be.\n
\nThe reason the country has seen an uptick in the building of biomass\nplants in recent years relates to the number of tax incentives, both\nlocally and at the state and national levels, that have become available,\nhe said.\n
\nWhen taken at cost, biomass plants are just as expensive as nuclear\nplants, Sammons said.\n
\nIf the more than 300 proposed biomass plants come online the federal\ngovernment, Sammons said, will be on the hook to spend $250 billion\ndollars through tax incentives and tax credits.\n
\n\u201cThat\u2019s your dollars,\u201d Sammons said.\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd that’s despite repeated assertions from the Valdosta-Lowndes\nCounty Industrial Authority (VLCIA) that the local biomass incinerator\nwill use no tax dollars.\n
\nHow about we repurpose those subsidies, and\nthe massive fossil fuel subsidies,<\/a>\nto real clean energy, such as wind offshore, solar inland, and efficiency\nand conservation everywhere?\n
\n\n
<\/a>\nAs Dr. Sammons concluded:\n
\nSammons told the audience that this was a preventative issue and that\nother means of energy production and conservation are available.\n\nCurrently, Germany leads the world in solar installations, he said.\n
\nValdosta, Sammons said, gets 70 percent more sunlight than any city in Germany.\n
\n\u201cYou have another source of energy here,\u201d he said.\n<\/blockquote>\n
