phrase Dr. William Sammons used to described biomass energy<br \/>\nplants at Monday night\u2019s biomass forum at Valdosta State University\u2019s<br \/>\nStudent Union theater.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Sammons answered many of the unanswered concerns about the biomass<br \/>\nincinerator, and,<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/how-about-some-real-clean-energy-jobs-and-a-renewable-energy-strategy-for-georgia.html\"><br \/>\nunlike the lack of peer-reviewed evidence from the plant proponents<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5120631807\/in\/set-72157625129414895\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\"  src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4131\/5120631807_0260e0205e.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nSammons was meticulous in pointing out where his data came from citing<br \/>\nscientific studies and journals and even the Environmental Protection<br \/>\nAgency, along with health organizations like the American Cancer Society<br \/>\nand the American Lung Association.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5120631437\/in\/set-72157625129414895\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1354\/5120631437_847a83150d_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe people who approve the plant and the people who own the biomass plant<br \/>\nwill not being paying the medical bills in the future, Sammons said,<br \/>\ncommunity members and their children will be.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe reason the country has seen an uptick in the building of biomass<br \/>\nplants in recent years relates to the number of tax incentives, both<br \/>\nlocally and at the state and national levels, that have become available,<br \/>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhen taken at cost, biomass plants are just as expensive as nuclear<br \/>\nplants, Sammons said.<\/p>\n<p>\nIf the more than 300 proposed biomass plants come online the federal<br \/>\ngovernment, Sammons said, will be on the hook to spend $250 billion<br \/>\ndollars through tax incentives and tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThat\u2019s your dollars,\u201d Sammons said.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And that&#8217;s despite repeated assertions from the Valdosta-Lowndes<br \/>\nCounty Industrial Authority (VLCIA) that the local biomass incinerator<br \/>\nwill use no tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\nHow about we repurpose those subsidies, and<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/subsidize-solar-not-coal-or-biomass.html\">the massive fossil fuel subsidies,<\/a><br \/>\nto real clean energy, such as wind offshore, solar inland, and efficiency<br \/>\nand conservation everywhere?<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5120632131\/in\/set-72157625129414895\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4058\/5120632131_831ed439d5_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nAs Dr. Sammons concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nSammons told the audience that this was a preventative issue and that<br \/>\nother means of energy production and conservation are available.<\/p>\n<p>\nCurrently, Germany leads the world in solar installations, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nValdosta, Sammons said, gets 70 percent more sunlight than any city in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cYou have another source of energy here,\u201d he
