{"id":2572,"date":"2010-10-31T07:57:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-31T11:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/vdt-elevates-biomass-and-renewable-energy-as-political-issues.html"},"modified":"2010-10-31T07:57:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-31T11:57:00","slug":"vdt-elevates-biomass-and-renewable-energy-as-political-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2010\/10\/vdt-elevates-biomass-and-renewable-energy-as-political-issues.html","title":{"rendered":"VDT Elevates Biomass and Renewable Energy as Political Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"The Valdosta Daily Times (VDT) has apparently decided biomass and real clean energy instead are political issues.\nAs part of the VDT&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/biomass\/x2073114124\/Growing-oposition-of-proposed-biomass-energy-plant\">\nsudden turn against the VLCIA and its biomass plant,<\/a>\nwhich was\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/why-is-the-vdt-suddenly-anti-biomass-and-pro-solar.htm\">\nprovoked by citizen and student activism,<\/a>\nthe VDT started a week of articles with the headline\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/proposed-plant-said-to-be-medical-atrocity.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1364\/5121236438_1767058751_m.jpg\"><\/a>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/proposed-plant-said-to-be-medical-atrocity.html\">\n&#8220;Proposed plant said to be &#8216;medical atrocity'&#8221;<\/a>,\nabout Dr. William Sammons&#8217; Monday\ntalk about health problems of biomass and how solar is better.\n<p>\nThe VDT then featured biomass in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/election2010\/x652346859\/Meet-the-Candidates\">\nits reporting<\/a>\non the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/aauw-candidate-forum-today-7pm.html\">\nAAUW Candidate Forum<\/a>:\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/aauw-candidate-forum-today-7pm.html\">\n<blockquote>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/archive\/x603537798\/g0a0000000000000000bc7c4c518d41ed1b006e620c7fe054e8ce9f5240.jpg\"><\/a>\nAll four candidates for the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners were\npresent for the forum \u2014 District 2 seat, Republican Richard Raines and\nDemocrat Debra Franklin and District 3 seat, Republican Crawford Powell\nand Democrat Bill Eger.\n<p>\nRaines and Franklin were asked about issues relating to the Biomass\nproject and plans for increasing jobs in the are.\n<p>\nIn regard to the proposed Biomass project, Raines thinks the focus should\nbe on return for investment and that other sectors of the economy should\nbe looked into. Franklin also supports green energy but feels that since\nschools are located near the proposed site it could be hazardous to them.\n<p>\n\u201cI don\u2019t think one child\u2019s life is worth 25 jobs,\u201d she said.\n<p>\nIn terms of jobs, Raines wants to focus on businesses that are the\n\u201cmost recession proof\u201d and Franklin wants to focus on \u201cbuilding\nbusinesses we already have.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, I was there, and it seems to me Raines never actually said he was opposed to the biomass incinerator or for real clean energy such as solar.\n<p>\nMeanwhile, if you&#8217;d like to\nask some of your already elected or appointed\nofficials some of the same questions the VDT has been trying to get answered,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/contact-information-for-elected-and-appointed-officials.html\">\nhere&#8217;s how to reach them.<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Valdosta Daily Times (VDT) has apparently decided biomass and real clean energy instead are political issues.
