Can you spot the conflict of interest?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nDrug sweeps of schools are not uncommon occurrences in the recent\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2012\/dec\/13\/arizona-business-cca-school-to-prison-pipeline\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c34ac0b50970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c34ac0b50970b-pi.jpg\"   width=\"230\" height=\"138\"  \/><\/a>\npast in America, much to the chagrin of civil rights advocates, who\nsee such sweeps as an efficient means of diverting certain kids to\nprison \u2014 in some cases, even before they make it to\nadolescence, via the much-criticized\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/10\/stpp-dismantling-the-school-to-prison-pipeline-symposium.html\">\n&#8220;school-to-prison pipeline&#8221;<\/a>.\nWhat was unusual about this particular raid, however, is that, among\nthe team of law enforcement personnel and canines put together by\nthe local Casa Grande police department, there were prison guards\nemployed by the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the\ncountry&#8217;s largest for-profit prison company, which owns and operates\nseveral prisons in the area. CCA was also kind enough to provide\ntheir sniffer dogs for the raid.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhat&#8217;s even more unusual about this is that pretty much nobody in a\nposition of authority in and around Casa Grande seems to think\nthere&#8217;s anything wrong with that.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.policymic.com\/articles\/20186\/war-on-drugs-how-private-prisons-are-using-the-drug-war-to-generate-more-inmates\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c34ac0b5e970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c34ac0b5e970b-pi.jpg\"   width=\"250\" height=\"157\"  \/><\/a>\nThat&#8217;s where &#8220;jobs, jobs, jobs&#8221; with no consideration of the consequences\nleads you.\nSome jobs are not worth having.\nPrivate prison jobs are among them.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe state of Georgia spends a billion dollars a year locking people up,\nmany of them for minor drug offenses, and around 85% of them for\ndrug-related offenses.\nWhat if instead we spent a fraction of that money on drug counselling\nand mental health care, and the rest on public education?\nThen we&#8217;d have healthier people more prepared for real jobs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPS: Owed to Dante Acevedo.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We could have slipped down this slippery slope with that proposed CCA private prison, down to where Casa Grande Arizona is, inviting CCA&#8217;s guards and dogs into our schools to collect our children as private prison customers.
