{"id":2511,"date":"2011-01-13T17:40:38","date_gmt":"2011-01-13T22:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/what-is-fiery-roots.html"},"modified":"2011-01-13T17:40:38","modified_gmt":"2011-01-13T22:40:38","slug":"what-is-fiery-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/what-is-fiery-roots.html","title":{"rendered":"What is Fiery Roots?"},"content":{"rendered":"So what is this &#8220;Fiery Roots U.S.A. project&#8221;\nmentioned in the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/paulk-interrogates-noll.html.html\">\nletter Chairman Paulk said contained &#8220;veiled threats&#8221;?<\/a>\nLAKE\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/far_from_over.html.html \">\ncouldn&#8217;t find any threats in the letter<\/a>,\nand we hadn&#8217;t heard of its author, Russell Anderson,\nso let&#8217;s look at\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/topics\/biomass\/wace\/EmailXfromXMr.XAnderson.pdf\">\nthe organization he lists,<\/a> whose name didn&#8217;t ring a bell with us, either.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/?p=1\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"227\" height=\"161\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/fiery-roots-usa-white-bg.jpg\"><\/a>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/?p=1\">\n&#8220;Fiery Roots U.S.A. project&#8221;<\/a> says:\n<blockquote>\nCollective Progression\u2019s mission is to engage individuals and grassroots\norganizations in order to document social and environmental justice\nstruggles and solutions. We will be providing live and online trainings,\nresources, and networking opportunities that empower people to effect\npositive change in their communities.\n<\/blockquote>\nHm, well, except for the specific focus, that&#8217;s pretty much what LAKE does.\nMore:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nCollectiveProgression.org seeks to document community struggles and\ninitiatives by meeting people where they are in their experience,\ngoals, and capacities. We hope this will increase awareness of the\ninterrelation of seemingly isolated community struggles by providing\na platform that enables people to share experiences and connect with a\nbroader audience. We will strive to achieve this while maintaining an\nopen spirit of collaboration and a deep respect for the experiences and\nunderstandings of the local communities.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat sounds awful like the flip side of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Lowndes-Area-Knowledge-Exchange-LAKE\/175727935781529?v=app_2344061033#!\/event.php?eid=182113251813537&#038;index=1\">\n&#8220;Covering the planners to connect the dots&#8221;,<\/a>\nwhich was the theme of our most recent LAKE meeting.\nWe mostly concentrate on covering existing governmental\nand related organizations.\nIt sounds like this &#8220;Fiery Roots&#8221;\nconcentrates more on covering non-governmental groups.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   width=\"216\" height=\"68\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/logo4.png\"><\/a>\nThe motto of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectiveprogression.org\/\">\nCollectiveProgression.org<\/a>\nis:\n<blockquote>\nFiring up the Grassroots!\n<\/blockquote>\nMaybe some readers aren&#8217;t familiar with the obvious allusion\nto the Obama campaign&#8217;s call-and-response slogan:\n<blockquote>\nFired up!  Ready to go!\n<\/blockquote>\nThat&#8217;s fired up as in &#8220;fire in the belly&#8221; and enthusiastic for the task.\nPresumably that&#8217;s where the &#8220;Fiery&#8221; in Fiery Roots comes from:\nfired-up grassroots organizing.\nWhat is so scary about that?\n<p>\nMaybe a bit too fired up and in need of some reflection before posting,\njudging by the way their letter rambled into calling out the Langdales,\nwho so far as I know have no known connection with the particular\nproject questioned by the letter.\nHowever, that&#8217;s not surprising for a couple of recent college graduates,\nwhich appears to be who Fiery Roots is.\n<p>\nWhat is surprising is the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/paulk-interrogates-noll.html.html\">\nintemperant response.<\/a>\nSwatting at gnats just makes people wonder\nwhat smell has attracted them,\nfar more than letting them buzz ever would.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"So what is this &#8220;Fiery Roots U.S.A. project&#8221; mentioned in the letter Chairman Paulk said contained &#8220;veiled threats&#8221;?
