\r\nHurricane preparedness and recovery took most up of the 22-minute\r\nRegular Session of the Lowndes County Commission Tuesday.\r\n

\r\nThe Commissioners appointed Sam Clemons to the\r\n\r\nLowndes County Library Board<\/a>.\r\nMonday morning at the Work Session, Malcom Warren was the only applicant, but he was not even nominated at the Regular Session.\r\n

\r\nThey approved everything else unanimously, with little discussion.\r\n

\r\nThey did talk about body cameras in \r\n7.c. Axon Renewal Contract for Animal Services<\/a>.\r\nApparently they’re used to de-escalate tense confrontations,\r\nwhen people see the camera.\r\n

\r\nCounty Manager Paige Dukes in her\r\nReports<\/a>\r\n discussed the confusion over tax assessment notices.\r\nThe Tax Assessors staff sent out\r\n\r\n what the state required,\r\nwhich did not include the millages for Parks and Rec., Industrial Authority,\r\nor Fire.\r\nThus people may have thought their tax bills would be significantly lower\r\nthan they actually will be.\r\nShe was alerted to this when the Chief Appraiser pointed out that there were not many appeals to property valuations.\r\n

\r\nApparently sending out a revised letter including the millage would\r\nnot be allowed by state law, but they can send out an additional letter\r\nnoting the discrepency.\r\nI think that’s what she said they are going to do.\r\nOr maybe it was to send a letter omitting all mention of millage.\r\nWasn’t clear to me.\r\n

\r\nAnd of course, the county’s opt-out from the state homestead exemption\r\nwon’t take effect until the citizens vote it in, in November I think.\r\nChairman Bill Slaughter noted that the county has better homestead exemptions.\r\nPeople have to apply for the exemptions, because the assessors don’t know\r\nages of the taxpayers.\r\n

\r\nMeghan Barwick was to host a PIO meeting Friday (today) about\r\nhow to talk about storm season now that we’re in it.\r\n

\r\nEMA Director Ashley Tye gave a long presentation on\r\n\r\nLong Term Recovery<\/a> from hurricanes and other disasters.\r\nThis includes asking those who need help how much their insurance covers\r\nand finding out what else can be handled by FEMA or whoever.\r\n

\r\nThere were no Citizens Wishing to be Heard, so they adjourned the meeting,\r\nafter 22 and a half minutes.\r\n

\r\nCommissioner Joyce Evans was absent.\r\n

\r\nOn Thursday (now yesterday), EMA Director Ashley Tye was to go to Atlanta\r\nto pick up two reimbursement checks, one for Hurricane Idalia\r\nand another for Hurricane Helene, for a total of $4.7 million.\r\nI’m guessing that’s state funds.\r\nXXX\r\n
