It might take that many acres, but\nAustin and Houston, Texas are doing it on housetops and\nbusiness roofs, and the power is available when it\nis needed most: on hot summer days when people are\nrunning air conditioners. There are at least two\ncompanies right here in Lowndes County that could\nstart with that right now; all that is missing is\npolitical will and financing.\n
\nHouston, which gets less sun than Valdosta, also goes\ninto neighborhoods and asks homeowners whether they\nwant their houses refitted for insulation and efficiency,\nand then goes back and does the ones that say yes.\nThis employs a lot of local contractors.\n
\nMeanwhile, places like Austin, Houston, and Dublin, Georgia\n(with its MAGE SOLAR plant with 350 jobs), Raleigh, North Carolina,\nand Saginaw, Michigan (where Suniva’s PV manufacturing plant\nwith its 500 jobs went) didn’t stop with tiny plants with\n25 jobs and didn’t recruit larger plants through secrecy.\nDublin wears green, Saginaw calls itself Solar Valley,\nand in each case business, academia, government, and the\npublic work in concert.\n
\nThe only reason anyone can claim that Wiregrass Power LLC’s\ntiny solar plant will be the biggest in Georgia is because\nGeorgia lags far behind Texas, Florida, and North Carolina\nin solar. This is an opportunity to actually be the leader\nin clean energy for Georgia. Currently Hahira has that\ndistinction, with the only two recent domestic rooftop\nsolar PV installations around here. Think what they\ncould do if the Industrial Authority helped!\n
\nI see by your full page ad in the VDT and Brad Lofton’s\ncontinuing speaking tour that you are willing to do publicity.\nWhy not do it for real clean energy, and on a much larger scale?\n
\nMaybe you could pursue some of these ideas. Maybe you have\nothers that are better. At your last board meeting Norman\nBennett told us the problem was disunity in the community.\nYou can work out with the community something worth uniting behind.\n
\nWhat is your plan?\n
\n-jsq\n
\nJohn S.
