{"id":2489,"date":"2011-01-22T10:08:01","date_gmt":"2011-01-22T15:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/pollution-and-a-private-prison-dr-mark-george.html"},"modified":"2011-01-22T10:08:01","modified_gmt":"2011-01-22T15:08:01","slug":"pollution-and-a-private-prison-dr-mark-george","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/pollution-and-a-private-prison-dr-mark-george.html","title":{"rendered":"Pollution and a Private Prison? &#8211;Dr. Mark George"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/5378049908\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5283\/5378049908_edbb9eb4d8_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nAs<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/x530790180\/Opponents-to-proposed-biomass-plant-speak-out-at-meeting\"><br \/>\nthe VDT transcribed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;I think we can do better than a generator that burns human waste.<br \/>\nI think we can do better than a private prison<br \/>\nand those are two things that we seem to be excited about<br \/>\nas a community.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Mark George<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XHOns-LUugU\"><br \/>\nspoke to the Valdosta City Council,<\/a> 20 Jan 2011:<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XHOns-LUugU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nWe&#8217;ve previously written about <a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/cca-private-prisons-and-az-immigration-law.html\"><br \/>\nCCA private prisons and AZ immigration law<\/a> on 21 December 2010:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nConsidering how many local farmers and others around here use hispanic<br \/>\nhelp without inquiring closely as to where they come from, a CCA prison<br \/>\nin Lowndes County would be more than ironic.<\/p>\n<p>\nSpending state tax dollars to lock people up while cutting funding for<br \/>\neducation that would cost less per person doesn&#8217;t seem like a good idea<br \/>\nto me.<\/p>\n<p>\nIs this what we want to be known for?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And in<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/if-its-sunny-enough-in-buffalo.html\"><br \/>\nIf it&#8217;s sunny enough in Buffalo<\/a><br \/>\non 16 September 2010:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIn response to complaints about proposed polluting industries such as<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/category\/biomass\">a biomass plant<\/a><br \/>\nor private prisons, I hear: &#8220;We can&#8217;t turn down everything!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nWell, if we actively promoted real clean industry such as solar,<br \/>\nwe&#8217;d get more industry we wouldn&#8217;t want to turn down.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I mentioned<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/what-is-your-plan.html\"><br \/>\nto the VLCIA board,<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nMeanwhile, places like Austin, Houston, and Dublin, Georgia<br \/>\n(with its MAGE SOLAR plant with 350 jobs), Raleigh, North Carolina,<br \/>\nand Saginaw, Michigan (where Suniva&#8217;s PV manufacturing plant<br \/>\nwith its 500 jobs went) didn&#8217;t stop with tiny plants with<br \/>\n25 jobs and didn&#8217;t recruit larger plants through secrecy.<br \/>\nDublin wears green, Saginaw calls itself Solar Valley,<br \/>\nand in each case business, academia, government, and the<br \/>\npublic work in concert.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\nMaybe you could pursue some of these ideas.  Maybe you have<br \/>\nothers that are better.  At your last board meeting Norman<br \/>\nBennett told us the problem was disunity in the community.<br \/>\nYou can work out with the community something worth uniting behind.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>VLCIA is<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/were-industrial-development-mary-gooding.html\">at least interested in<br \/>\nexpanding the solar array VLCIA it is currently planning.<\/a><br \/>\nIf we went more in that direction and less towards pollution<br \/>\nand private prisons, we&#8217;d be a more attractive place for industry.<\/p>\n<p>\nWe can turn down industry we don&#8217;t want,<br \/>\nand that will help attract industry we do want.<\/p>\n<p>\nVideo of regular meeting, Valdosta City Council, 20 January 2011,<br \/>\nby John S.
