{"id":2481,"date":"2011-01-23T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-23T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/farmers-grow-renewable-energy-james-wright.html"},"modified":"2011-01-23T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-01-23T18:00:00","slug":"farmers-grow-renewable-energy-james-wright","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/farmers-grow-renewable-energy-james-wright.html","title":{"rendered":"Farmers grow renewable energy? &#8211;James Wright"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Omb8x0x2quA\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/i4.ytimg.com\/vi\/Omb8x0x2quA\/1.jpg\"><\/a>\nGrow crops to burn for fuel, or for food?\nValdosta City Council member\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Omb8x0x2quA\">\nJames Wright brings up\nan article about farmers growing plants for biomass fuel.<\/a>\nThese things get passed around by council members, and I&#8217;m pretty sure\nthis one that came to me indirectly is it:\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluestem.ca\/miscanthus.htm\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.bluestem.ca\/thumbnails\/miscanthus-adagio.jpg\"><\/a>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenergyfarms.com\/Article.aspx?ID=40\">\nNovember 12, 2010 &#8211; Incentivizing Renewable Biomass Production<\/a>,\nby New Energy Farms, Leamington, Ontario.\nWhat they&#8217;re mainly recommending is\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluestem.ca\/miscanthus.htm\">\nMiscanthus,<\/a>\nwhich is a genus of clump grass.\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Omb8x0x2quA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe>\n<br>\n<center>\n<small>The above video was already posted as part of<br>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/after-all-the-citizens-left-valdosta-city-council-20-jan-2011.html\">\nAfter all the citizens left &#8211;Valdosta City Council, 20 Jan 2011<\/a>.<\/small>\n<\/center>\n<p>\nNow call me old-fashioned, but I prefer local farmers growing food\n\n<!--more-->\ncrops for local consumption and export.\nI do grow clump grasses, including big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii),\nlittle bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium),\nwhich are recommended by USDA and UGA as\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plant-materials.nrcs.usda.gov\/pubs\/gapmcfo7058.pdf\">\nNative Warm Season Grasses<\/a>,\nbut I grow them for wildlife cover and for the health of my longleaf forests.\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.sc.us\/forest\/refmature.htm\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.state.sc.us\/forest\/wiregrass.jpg\"><\/a>\nI especially like\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfrc.ufl.edu\/4h\/wiregrass\/wiregras.htm\">\nwiregrass (Aristida stricta)<\/a>\nwhich really is native; that&#8217;s where I get mine: it&#8217;s always\nbeen growing in my woods.\nWiregrass in particular along with pine needles\nhelps fuel my prescribed burns every few years (more about that later).\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wiregrass_Region\">\nWiregrass is also the source of the name for the Wiregrass Region\nwe live in.<\/a>\n<p>\nThe economic point James Wright seems to be making is that he&#8217;s\nmost interested in jobs for local people.\nI&#8217;m all for that.\nI just think there are better ways.\nAs you can see local elected officials are listening for ideas.\nLet&#8217;s provide them some ideas for local jobs.\n<p>\nVideos by John S.
