\n\nBainbridge City Hall now hums with solar energy<\/a>,\nTristan Baurick wrote for Kitsap Sun 2 August 2012:\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nCity Hall’s array of 297 rooftop solar panels is expected to produce\nthe equivalent of 20 percent of the building’s energy needs,\naccording to Joe Deets, executive director of Community Energy\nSolutions, the Bainbridge nonprofit group that spearheaded the\nprivately-funded project.\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is a great day for Bainbridge,” Deets said.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nHow many solar panels do you see on Valdosta City Hall?\nWell, that’s a historic building.\nBut how about City Hall Annex?\nThe parking lot?\nThe\n\nformerly “100% Paid by SPLOST” Lowndes County palace that\nwe’re now paying almost $9 million in bonds for?<\/a>\nNope, not a solar panel in sight.\n<\/p>\n

\nOh, sorry, that’s\n\n\nBainbridge Island!\nIn foggy Puget Sound in Washington state about a thousand miles north of here,\nwith much less sunshine.\nSo hardly a comparison with sunny south Georgia at all, I suppose.\n<\/p>\n

\nActually, we might have a legal problem doing this in Georgia,\nbecause of that\n\n1973 Territorial Electric Service Act:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\n

\nThe $500,000 project was completely funded by 25 investors who live\non the island.\n<\/p>\n

\nCES leases a 200-foot-long portion of City Hall’s roof and will pay\nthe city half the value of the electrical production. The other half\nwill to the investors.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nBut, you know, City Hall could fight Georgia Power on that, if it wanted to.\nEven better, Georgia Power could help City Hall and the rest of us by\nlobbying for<\/em> changing that 1973 law.\n<\/p>\n
