\nTwo regional libraries officially merge this weekend, creating what should\nbe the most comprehensive genealogy facility in the Eastern United States.\n

\nOn Sunday, the Elmer\u2019s Genealogical Library of Madison, Fla.,\nmerges with the Huxford Genealogy Library in Homerville to become the\nHuxford-Spear Genealogical Library.\n

\nThe new library will be located in Homerville. Elmer Spear has closed\nhis Madison, Fla., facility and moved his library\u2019s 26,326 books,\nwhich covered 85 percent of a mile in shelving, to the newly named\nHuxford-Spear Genealogical Library.\n

\nSpear\u2019s volumes join the Huxford collection.\n<\/blockquote>\nI’m a Huxford Library member, and my 990 page family history book\nis in there, so I’m all for this.\n

\nLooks to me like an example of a local attraction started by local\npeople that can turn into a local industry.\nHey, look, the VDT thinks so, too, in their\n\neditorial of the same day:<\/a>\n\n\n

\nBut it has the potential to also serve as another valve in South\nGeorgia\u2019s economic engine.\n

\nTo use the library, one must either become a member or pay a user\u2019s\nfee. Numerous researchers are already anticipating the new library\u2019s\nopening. These researchers will not only be willing to pay fees. They\nwill also pay money to stay at area hotels and motels, eat at regional\nrestaurants, and buy other merchandise from regional businesses.\n

\nWe hope the library\u2019s organizers will do all within their power to make\nthis genealogical collection as accessible as possible to the public\nand travelers. And we hope that area leaders will do all within their\npower to help the library.\n

\nThe Huxford-Spear Genealogical Library has the potential to make history.\n<\/blockquote>\nI wonder if anything like that would work in Lowndes County?\nIs there anything Valdosta and Lowndes County is known for?\n

\nLet me think, Hahira has produced three professional baseball players.\nHey, what about sports!\nWhere’s the winter camp for a baseball team?\nWhere’s the academic conference on the effects of sports on communities?\nWhere’s the High School Football Hall of Fame?\n

\nWhat about music?\nHow many competitions have the LHS Georgia Bridgemen won by now?\nHow about holding a competition here?\n

\nI’m sure other people can think of more ideas for homegrown local industry.\n
