\nThe Smokey the Bear campaign actually started after<\/em>\nthe U.S. Forest Service (and the Georgia Forestry Commission)\nlearned that fire is necessary for the health of southern\npine forests:\nwithout it, undergrowth takes over, and eventually oaks take over,\nand there’s no more pine forest.\nThat was after forty years or more of official\nsuppression of forest fires.\nMore on that in\nLeon Neel’s book.<\/a>\n
