The group has volunteers who go out on patrols\nand begin videotaping police activity when they come across it.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.copwatchoea.org\/\">\nCopwatch of East Atlanta<\/a>; here&#8217;s their\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.copwatchoea.org\/content\/apd-settles-lawsuit-over-cops-stealing-activists-camera-trying-destroy-footage-drug-raid\">\npress release, including video of the incident.<\/a>\n\n<!--more-->\nSeems the cop said riding around on bicycles is suspicious.\nHe wanted to check their drivers&#8217; licences.\nAnd he really didn&#8217;t like anybody videoing that.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.11alive.com\/news\/local\/story.aspx?storyid=177508&#038;catid=40\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.11alive.com\/genthumb\/genthumb.ashx?e=3&#038;h=240&#038;w=320&#038;i=\/assetpool\/images\/110211063113_MarlonKautz_cell_phone_video_guy.jpg\"><\/a>\nSo the bicyclists, who were with Copwatch East Atlanta,\nfiled a complaint:\n<blockquote>\nThe Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA)\nis a private organization which has positioned itself as a certification\nbody for local police departments. In the past, the Atlanta Police\nDepartment has sought and received CALEA Accreditation. Now, the APD\nis up for review, and CALEA is seeking comments from the public on\ntheir practices.\n<p>\nSome CALEA standards include:\n<p>\n&#8220;Strengthen an agency&#8217;s accountability, both within the agency and the\ncommunity, through a continuum of standards that clearly define authority,\nperformance, and responsibilities.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAs\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.11alive.com\/news\/local\/story.aspx?storyid=177508&#038;catid=40\">\nMarlon Kautz says<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Police accountability is really an important issue to a lot of people right now.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/m.ajc.com\/news\/atlanta\/apd-wont-hinder-citizens-834521.html\">\nThe result<\/a>\nof this complaint by a citizens&#8217; watchdog group:\n<blockquote>\n&#8220;Commanders have made it clear that Atlanta police officers in the field\nshould not interfere with a citizen\u2019s right to film them while they\nwork in public areas,&#8221; said APD spokesman Carlos Campos.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe Atlanta City Council still has to vote for the settlement, which includes:\n<blockquote>\nThey will also have to pay $40,000, which Copwatch will use to fund\ntheir work as well as supporting other groups in Atlanta who seek to\nmonitor the police.\n<\/blockquote>\nA victory for transparency!\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ride your bicycle, have to show a drivers&#8217; license, get your camera stolen by police?
