{"id":2401,"date":"2011-02-15T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/biomass-plant-a-done-deal-floyd-rose.html"},"modified":"2011-02-15T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-15T14:00:00","slug":"biomass-plant-a-done-deal-floyd-rose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/biomass-plant-a-done-deal-floyd-rose.html","title":{"rendered":"Biomass plant a done deal? &#8211;Floyd Rose"},"content":{"rendered":"This LTE appeared in the VDT Sunday 13 February 2011. -jsq\n<blockquote>\nAbraham Lincoln said, &#8220;The probability that we shall fail\nin this struggle should not deter us from the support of a cause\nthat we believe is just.&#8221;\nSuch a cause for us is opposition to the biomass plant.\n<p>\nGiven its support from city and county officials more concerned\nabout doing the bidding of the rich and powerful than they are about\nthe health of children, it is likely a &#8220;done deal.&#8221;\nDone by those who will profit from the deal.\n<p>\nNone of the national health organizations endorse biomass plants\nas safe for children.\nThe American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association,\nand the World Health Organization have concluded that biomass plants\npose serious threats to children.\n<p>\nNone of the deal makers, investors, or politicians who signed off\non their deal live in the community which will most be affected by\nthe poisonous toxins that will fill the air.\nTheir children don&#8217;t attend the schools, nor do they attend any\nof the seven area churches.\n<p>\nMeetings have been held on the biomass project.\nSome by the Industrial Authority, WACE, the NAACP, and SCLC.\nAnd not a single citizen has spoken in favor of it.\nWhen I asked a council member about this, he said,\n&#8220;They are afraid of you.&#8221;\n<p>\nIt is not the proponents who have anything to fear.\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nThey are protected by the investors and their political allies.\nIt is the opponents who have to be concerned about being arrested,\ntaken to the Lowndes County Jail, denied bail, and put in\nsolitary confinement.\nThat was my experience on May 5, 2005.\nMy crime, and that of 14 others, was petitioning the city to rename\na park for someone who looked like the people where the park was located.\nThe law, &#8220;Disrupting a public meeting,&#8221; under which we were charged\nwas later declared unconstitutional by the Georgia Supreme Court.\n<p>\nThe opponents of this misadventure have been accused of grandstanding,\nand our appearance before city council described as &#8220;theatre.&#8221;\nVeterans of the Civil Rights and anti-war movements of the 80s and 70s\nhave heard it all before.\nBut students of history understand that everything that is faced is\nnot changed.\nAnd &#8220;Cautious, careful people, neither change anything,\nnot even their own minds.&#8221;\n<p>\nNothing is more disappointing than to see candidates who,\nwhen they are seeking office, are against something\nand promise to change it, and when they are elected,\nthey are for what they were against.\n<p>\nFloyd Rose is a Valdosta resident.\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This LTE appeared in the VDT Sunday 13 February 2011. -jsq Abraham Lincoln said, &#8220;The probability that we shall fail in this struggle should not deter us from the support of a cause that we believe is just.&#8221; Such a cause for us is opposition to the biomass plant.
