\r\nThe millage rate settings (general and fire district) got the most discussion\r\nyesterday morning, as well they should,\r\nin the Lowndes County Commission Work Session.\r\nFinance Director Stephanie Black was absent because of COVID,\r\nso the main millage rate slide show was given by someone else.\r\n

\r\nCommissioners Clay Griner and Mark Wisenbaker had some questions,\r\nwhich elicited information about what lower millage rate would\r\nmeet the county’s budget.\r\nAlso a mill this year is worth about $4.2 million,\r\nwhile last year it was about $3.2 million.\r\nThis is because increases in tax assessments as the Tax Assessors catch up.\r\n

\r\nThe County Attorney said something inaudible in there, because he was facing away from his microphone.\r\n

\r\nCommissioner Mark Wisenbaker asked whether the fire department could get its millage\r\nadjusted down.\r\nChairman Bill Slaughter said they were still building.\r\nCommissioner Wisenbaker asked when they’re all built, then could we adjust that down?\r\nThe Chairman that would be something to consider.\r\nCounty Manager Paige Dukes said that staff and other expenses were running higher than expected, but maybe some new items could go into the next SPLOST.\r\n

\r\nCommissioner Wisenbaker wanted to know what kind of balance\r\nthe fire department had.\r\nNobody knew, but the Chairman said they could get that that day.\r\n

\r\nThey vote tonight at 5:30 PM.\r\n

\r\nBefore then, you may want to ask your County Commissioner:\r\n\r\n\r\nwhy is the county fire department still to get twice as much millage as Parks and Rec, and three times as much as the Industrial Authority?\r\nDidn’t they already build those fire stations?\r\n

\r\nThere is no public hearing about the millage tonight,\r\nso call them now or too late.\r\n

\r\nThere was no explanation why only one of the three beer and wine license applications got a public hearing.\r\n
