Quarterman for LAKE, the Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange.\n<\/small>\n<\/center>\n<p>\nGeorgia Power had several pages in the business section of the\nValdosta Daily Times (VDT) the previous Sunday, written up\non Monday as\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/business\/x1405848912\/Harnessing-the-sun-s-rays\/print\">\nHarnessing the sun\u2019s rays:\nGeorgia Power kicks off 18-month solar power study<\/a>,\nby Karah-Leigh Hancock, about what Gapower is doing instead of actually deploying solar:\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrdw.com\/home\/headlines\/Georgia_Power_studying_solar_panels_in_Augusta_115551724.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/media.graytvinc.com\/images\/solar-panels-110208.jpg\"><\/a>\nGeorgia Power and Electric Power Research Institute are conducting the\n18-month long study to determine how solar photovoltaic systems may\naffect the utility\u2019s distribution system.\n<p>\n&#8220;The whole purpose (of the research project) is to determine the\nviability of solar power in our area,&#8221; said Zach Nelson, a distribution\nengineer for Georgia Power.\n<p>\nThe study is being performed in six cities \u2014 Valdosta, Rome, Macon,\nAugusta, Columbus, Savannah and Conley. Fifty photovoltaic systems have\nbeen installed and seven to eight small systems are being installed in\none distribution line in each city.\n<p>\nAccording to Georgia Power, the locations were picked based on a number\nof environmental parameters.\n<\/blockquote>\nI wonder if one of the environmental parameters for Valdosta was\nthe Wiregrass Solar plant was making it obvious Georgia Power\nwasn&#8217;t deploying anything?\nThe timing certainly seems related, since\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrdw.com\/home\/headlines\/Georgia_Power_studying_solar_panels_in_Augusta_115551724.html\">Gapower PR about this project elsewhere in the state<\/a>\noccured a couple of weeks earlier.\nRemember what\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/02\/hannah-solar-at-wiregrass-solar-groundbreaking-21-feb-2011.html\">\nHannah Solar CEO Pete Marte<\/a> said about the fox in the henhouse.\n<p>\nMore from Georgia Power, which I have illustrated with\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/jsq-vdt-lte-pro-solar-ga.html\">\na map of solar radiation found on their own website:<\/a>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/jsq-vdt-lte-pro-solar-ga.html\">\n<img style=\"float:right;border:00px solid black;\"   width=\"290\" height=\"301\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.georgiapower.com\/spotlightsolar\/images\/daily_solar_energy.gif\"><\/a>\n&#8220;One good thing about the data we\u2019ll be able to get, not only will\nit tell us how effective they are (and) how well they stand up to the\nweather, we will be able (to offer solar power capabilities) and a lot\nof our customers are looking into renewable energy in their buildings,&#8221;\nNelson said. &#8220;(After this project), we will have two years of data and\nwe can say, &#8216;This is how you can expect (the panels) to perform.&#8217; So\n(the results) will be useful for us and our customers.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nAh, Georgia Power!
