{"id":2338,"date":"2011-03-09T20:37:53","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T01:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/a-new-tornado-alley.html"},"modified":"2011-03-09T20:37:53","modified_gmt":"2011-03-10T01:37:53","slug":"a-new-tornado-alley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/03\/a-new-tornado-alley.html","title":{"rendered":"A new tornado alley?"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/2011\/03\/re-defining_tornado_alley.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/images\/tornado-alley.jpg\"><\/a>\nJust a couple of weeks ago a local elected official told me\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/noaa-weather-radios-needed-on-the-edge-of-the-county-john-s-quarterman.html\">\n&#8220;we didn&#8217;t live in tornado alley&#8221;<\/a>.\nWell, after\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/tornado-warning-you-would-have-heard-this-on-noaa-weather-radio.html\">\ntoday&#8217;s storm<\/a>\nin which\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/27132475\/detail.html\">\napparently there were some tornados to the west before it got here,<\/a>\nthe Washington Post remarks on\n<a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/capitalweathergang\/2011\/03\/re-defining_tornado_alley.html\">Mardi Gras storm risk &#038; the new tornado alley<\/a>:\n<blockquote>\nDespite the lack of historic twister activity around New Orleans,\ntornado climatology indicates they become much more common due north\ninto south central Mississippi and expanding northeast and northwest\nfrom northern Alabama across northern Louisiana, southwest Tennessee\nand into eastern Arkansas.\n<\/blockquote>\nAs you can see by the map they posted from a recent study,\none pocket of this new tornado alley, nicknamed Dixie Alley,\nis in south Georgia.\n<p>\nThe article goes on to quote a different study that said:\n<blockquote>\n&#8230;Dixie Alley has the highest frequency of long-track F3 to F5 tornadoes,\nmaking it the most active region in the United States. &#8230; Based on this\nanalysis, colloquial tornado alley fails to represent the areas of highest\nactivity in the United States, indicating that a more comprehensive\nanalysis of additional tornado alleys in the United States by the NWS\nmay be needed in the future.\n<\/blockquote>\nSo yes, we do live in the new tornado alley.\n<p>\nSure would be nice for people around here to have\n<a href=\"\/blog\/category\/noaa-weather-radios\">\nNOAA Weather Radios.<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<p>\nPS: Nothing but wind and rain on my hill.
