\nIn addition to a news story about\n\nBrad Lofton moving on up to Myrtle Beach<\/a>,\nthe Valdosta Daily Times also had an editorial yesterday (14 March),\n\nLofton\u2019s leaving a void<\/a>\nin which they make some good points, including:\n

\nWhile the search is on for a new director, now is the time for the city,\ncounty and industrial authority board to come together to make some\ndecisions about the organization and what the community leadership needs\nand wants it to be.\n<\/blockquote>\nHere are\n\na few modest suggestions along those lines, including considerations\nsuch as water.<\/a>\n

\nMore from the VDT:\n\n\n

\nParameters on the types of industry would be a good place to start,\nfollowed by decisions on how all of that tax money the industrial\nauthority is now receiving should be spent.\n<\/blockquote>\nThat would be\n\n1 mil or $3 million a year in local tax money<\/a>\nand let’s not forget\n\nthe $15 million balooning to $23.5 million\nin bonds and other debt obligations.<\/a>\nI’d still like to know\n\ndoes the Lowndes County Commission\nhave a fiduciary obligation to oversee VLCIA because of the\ninter-governmental agreement for the county to co-guarantee those bonds?<\/a>\n

\nHere’s another good point from the VDT:\n

\nThey have snatched up acres and acres of property in recent years,\nbut to date, those properties remain empty.\n<\/blockquote>\nVLCIA’s most recent Annual Financial Report lists\n\n$11,573,736 in land assets.<\/a>\nI think they’ve said that’s somewhere between 400 and 500 acres.\nPerhaps VLCIA could explain what is the value to the community\nof VLCIA owning all that land.\n
