\r\nOther than the seven-minute not-on-the-agenda Georgia Forestry presentation by\r\nLowndes County Chief Ranger Mike Williford,\r\nthe highest-dollar item got the most discussion:\r\nGriner Park, at the corner of Webster and Ashley Street.\r\n

\r\nThere was no discussion of the items about redoing their botched rezoning decision.\r\n

\r\nThey did kvetch about each of the extraterritorial jurisdiction items\r\nfor water and sewer, alleging it was all somebody else’s fault.\r\nBut why did the county not catch these earlier?\r\n

\r\nThat was at the Work Session yesterday morning.\r\nThe Lowndes County Commission voted this evening at their Regular Session.\r\n

\r\nSome Commissioners seemed unclear on why they were spending so much on Griner Park.\r\nHere’s Gretchen’s take:\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\nOk, so I get that water on a property has to be held on the property\r\n(thus the underground drainage, etc). However, how is it that the\r\ncounty needs to develop a piece of property with tax dollars that\r\ncould be developed with private money. The current proposal is to\r\nput a park there. The city of Valdosta just made a park at the\r\ncorner of Lee and Central, just two blocks away. I get that it was\r\nin the county’s best interest to buy the old Griner car dealership\r\nproperty, spend the time to monitor the potential for underground\r\ncontamination, but why now spend tax dollars to develop it into yet\r\nanother park. Isn’t that what free enterprise is all about? And why\r\nnow? There are three “private” properties that abut this property on\r\nthe back that could use some serious re-development. Couldn’t the\r\nmoney be better spent to make those houses presentable (at least\r\none has boarded up windows).\r\n<\/p>\r\n
