\nATLANTA, March 16, 2011 \/PRNewswire\/ — Georgia Power expects to request\napproval from the Georgia Public Service Commission to decertify two\ncoal-generating units totaling 569 megawatts, the company announced\nWednesday.\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThe request to decertify units 1 and 2 at Plant Branch in Putnam Co. will\nbe included in Georgia Power’s updated Integrated Resource Plan filing\nwith the commission in late summer. The company expects to ask for\ndecertification of the units as of the effective dates of the Georgia\nMultipollutant Rule, which are currently anticipated to be Dec. 31,\n2013 for unit 1 and Oct. 1, 2013 for unit 2.\n

\nThe decision to decertify the units is based on a need to install\nenvironmental controls to meet a variety of existing and expected\nenvironmental regulations.\n

\n“After an extensive analysis of the cost to comply with environmental\nregulations, we have determined the continued operation of these units\nwould be uneconomical for our customers,” said Georgia Power President\nand CEO Paul Bowers. “This decision is in keeping with our focus to\nprovide affordable and reliable electricity for our customers.”\n<\/blockquote>\nThis matches with\n\na report from last July<\/a> that gapower was turning away from coal.\nAnd they\n\nsuspended work on Plant Branch a year ago.<\/a>\nUnfortunately, mostly they’re turning to natural gas and nuclear.\n\n\n

\n\n<\/a>\n\nWe know they know there’s another way, namely solar,<\/a>\nalthough they want to study that to death for another 18 months\nat least; nevermind that Texas and Florida and other places\nhave already demonstrated it in production for years.\n

\nHey, maybe Georgia Power could get around to\n\nconnecting up the Wiregrass Solar LLC plant in Valdosta<\/a>\nthat Hannah Solar has already completed!\n
