That year, the new pollution controls will prevent an\nestimated 200,000 cases of heart disease, 2.4 million asthma flare-ups\nand 22.4 million missed school and work days.\n<p>\nThe study was ordered by the 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act,\nwhich were signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. Most of the\nstricter limits on smog and soot also date back to those amendments,\nwhich passed with support from both parties.\n<\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/earth911.com\/news\/2010\/06\/28\/how-america-has-gone-green\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/earth911.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Nixon-EPA-1970-300x200.jpg\"><\/a>\nHere are links to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/air\/sect812\/\">that and the preceding studies<\/a>\nfrom EPA.\nThe earlier reports go all the way back to 1970, when President Nixon\ncreated the EPA.\nAll three reports show that &#8220;the public health protection and environmental benefits of the Clean Air Act exceeded the costs of its programs by a large margin.&#8221;\n<p>\nLisa Jackson also talked about exporting catalytic converters and other\ntechnology developed to conform with the Clean Air Act.\nSo this regulation is a financial plus to the country in\nseveral ways, in addition to making our air cleaner.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Listening to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson about EPA&#8217;s proposed new mercury rules, for me, the live feed on facebook did not work, but the one on whitehouse.gov did.
