Even the Kamisu semi-offshore wind farm,\nlocated about 300km from the epicenter of the quake, survived. Its\nanti-earthquake &#8220;battle proof design&#8221; came through with flying colors.\n<p>\nMr. Ueda confirms that most Japanese wind turbines are fully\noperational. Indeed, he says that electric companies have asked wind\nfarm owners to step up operations as much as possible in order to make\nup for shortages in the eastern part of the country:\n<\/blockquote>\nThe only wind farms not operational are stopped because of failure\nof the grid to feed electricity into, says Mr. Ueda:\n<blockquote>\nEurus Energy Japan says that 174.9MW with eight wind farms (64% of\ntheir total capacity with 11 wind farms in eastern part of Japan)\nare in operation now. The residual three wind farms (Kamaishi 42.9MW,\nTakinekoshirai 46MW, Satomi 10.02MW) are stopped due to the grid failure\ncaused by the earthquake and Tsunami.\n<\/blockquote>\nSo they wind farms built like that could most likely survive a hurricane\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/offshore-wind-energy-cheaper-than-nuclear-eu-climate-chief.html\">\nin the Georgia Bight.<\/a>\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They keep working.
