King, Marc Mauer and Tracy Huling,\nFebruary 2003.)\n<p>\nTheir Key Findings:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ppjr.org\/prison\/files\/tracy huling prisons economy study.pdf\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/thedefendersonline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/marc-mauer.jpg\"><\/a>\nOverall, over the course of 25 years, we find no significant difference or\ndiscernible pattern of economic trends between the seven rural counties in\nNew York that hosted a prison and the seven rural counties that did not\nhost a prison. While prisons clearly create new jobs, these benefits do\nnot aid the host county to any substantial degree since local residents\nare not necessarily in a position to be hired for these jobs. The most\nsignificant findings are as follows:\n<\/blockquote>\nThey go on to detail effects on unemployment during\neconomic recovery, downturn, and boom, and in each period\n\n<!--more-->\nunemployment\nwas slightly <em>worse<\/em> in counties that hosted a prison.\nThey looked at per capita income and concluded that:\n<blockquote>\nCounties that hosted new prisons received no economic advantage as\nmeasured by per capita income.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/private-prison-a-major-impact-on-the-community-brad-lofton.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/i2.ytimg.com\/vi\/UjrTXJiSOq4\/default.jpg\"><\/a>\nRemember, the justification for a private prison in Lowndes County\nis supposed to be\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/private-prison-a-major-impact-on-the-community-brad-lofton.html\">\n&#8220;jobs, jobs, jobs&#8221;<\/a>.\nAccording to this study, it won&#8217;t even increase jobs.\nAnd the study didn&#8217;t even look into\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/whats-the-value-of-inmates.html\">\ndirt-cheap prison labor competing with local labor<\/a>.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"According to an empirical study, siting a private prison in a rural county does not increase employment.
