A similar bill, SB 40, has also<br \/>\npassed the State Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/nation-world\/thousands-protest-georgia-immigration-885061.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/multimedia\/dynamic\/00876\/GAJA106_876970l.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nWhile the vast majority of protesters at the Capitol were Hispanic,<br \/>\nopposition to the bills came from a wide spectrum of constituents<br \/>\nincluding immigrants, students, religious groups, peace groups, veterans<br \/>\nof the Civil Rights Movement, Asian groups, GLBTQI activists, labor,<br \/>\nartists, musicians, business owners, elected officials, and others.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What&#8217;s this got to do with private prisons?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nSame as we reported<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/cca-private-prisons-and-az-immigration-law.html\"><br \/>\nback when the VDT first bragged about VLCIA&#8217;s bad idea to bring<br \/>\na CCA private prison to Lowndes County.<\/a><br \/>\nThe AJC<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/nation-world\/thousands-protest-georgia-immigration-885061.html\"><br \/>\ndid report on the rally, or at least carried an AP story,<\/a><br \/>\n(that&#8217;s the source of the pictures of the rally here),<br \/>\nbut it did not make this connection.<br \/>\nThe APN story continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nOften overlooked in the immigration debate is the influence of the<br \/>\nCorrections Corporation of America (CCA) in lobbying elected officials to<br \/>\nsupport anti-immigration bills and in helping to draft Arizona&#8217;s SB 1070.<br \/>\nAPN previously reported on these connections, with CCA lobbyists currently<br \/>\nworking the halls of the Georgia Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;The private prison corporations that make money off of immigrants<br \/>\nare behind these bills,&#8221; Azadeh Shahshahani, Director of the National<br \/>\nSecurity\/Immigrants&#8217; Rights Project of American Civil Liberties Union<br \/>\nof Georgia, said.  &#8220;Do we want Georgia to be known as a state friendly<br \/>\nto CCA or a state friendly to immigrants?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nCCA&#8217;s profitability depends on increasing numbers of immigrants sent to<br \/>\ntheir for-profit private prisons.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How about do we want dirt-cheap private prison labor<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/whats-the-value-of-inmates.html\"><br \/>\nto compete with local labor<\/a>?<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/state-needs-to-rethink-locking-up-nonviolent-offenders-nathan-deal.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/images\/stories\/report_images\/incarceration1-fig5.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nHow about do we want to lock up more people when even<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/state-needs-to-rethink-locking-up-nonviolent-offenders-nathan-deal.html\"><br \/>\nGov. Nathan Deal says we can&#8217;t afford it to lock up nonviolent offenders<\/a><br \/>\nin a time when Georgia already spends<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/05\/cost-of-incarceration-in-georgia.html\"><br \/>\na billion dollars a year on incarceration?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/01\/pollution-and-a-private-prison-dr-mark-george.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5283\/5378049908_edbb9eb4d8_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nTo its credit, the VDT does occasionally print something somebody<br \/>\nlocally says against private prisons,<br \/>\nsuch as Dr. Mark George in January:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;I think we can do better than a generator that burns human waste.<br \/>\nI think we can do better than a private prison&#8230;.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The AJC<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/nation-world\/thousands-protest-georgia-immigration-885061.html\"><br \/>\nquoted John Lewis<\/a><br \/>\n(picture from<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/Thousands-protest-Georgia-immigration-bills-1283140.php#photo-5\"><br \/>\nthe Florida Times-Union<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/Thousands-protest-Georgia-immigration-bills-1283140.php#photo-5\"><br \/>\n<img style=\"float:right;border:none;\"\nwidth=\"209\" height=\"136\"\nsrc=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/mediaManager\/?controllerName=image&#038;action=get&#038;id=702361&#038;width=628&#038;height=471\"><\/a><br \/>\nU.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, a leader of the 1960s civil rights<br \/>\nmovement, encouraged the crowd to keep fighting.
