\nCorey Hull of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Metropolitan Planning Organization\n(VLMPO)\nexplained T-SPLOST\nat the regular monthly meeting,\nValdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority (VLCIA).\nGeorgia HB 277, which was passed by the legislature and signed into law\nlast year,\ncalls for a 1% regional sales tax (T-SPLOST) to fund\ntransportation projects.\n

\n\n<\/a>\n

\nThe region including Lowndes County has 18 counties,\n\n\n\n<\/a>\nthe same counties as for the\n\nSouthern Georgia Regional Commission (SGRC),<\/a>\nwhich is the organization Corey Hull works for and that\n\nhosts VLMPO.<\/a>\nAccording to SGRC,\n\nthose counties are:<\/a>\n

\nAtkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Pierce, Tift, Turner, and Ware.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nAll municipalities in the region were supposed to submit a list of\nproposed projects by March 31.\nHere is\n\nLowndes County’s list.<\/a>\nThe City of Valdosta submitted an even more extensive and expensive list;\nwe’ll post that later.\n

\nIn June and July an executive roundtable will pick among the projects\nproposed.\nCurrent estimates are that T-SPLOST will raise\n$55 – $80 million dollars per year, so the committee must\nselect the project lists down to fit that estimate.\n(I don’t know whether that is for this region or for the state.)\nIn October of this year the roundtable must select the projects.\nThe voters will vote on them in a referendum 21 August 2012.\nIf the voters don’t approve T-SPLOST for a region, municipalities\nin that region must pay a penalty.\n
