\nYou’ve heard Corey Hull of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Metropolitan Planning Organization (VLMPO)\n\ngive a brief version of T-SPLOST at VLCIA.<\/a>\nHere he talks at greater length at the\n\nLowndes County Democratic Party:<\/a>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nThe Georgia legislature passed what was then known as House bill 277\ncalled\n\nTransportation Investment Act of 2010<\/a>….\nIt created or proposed a one percent sales tax for transportation purposes\nthroughout the state of Georgia.\nIt creates\ntwelve special transportation taxing districts\nthat are based on the boundaries of the regional commissions.\nAnd that is where the connection with the regional commission stops.\nThey are not the same body….\n<\/blockquote>\nSo who are these regional commissions?\n\n\n
\n<\/a>\nChairman Paulk and Mayor Fretti are our representatives from Lowndes County.\n<\/blockquote>\nThere’s a mayor and the county commission chair from each county in the region.\n
\nIt also created an executive committee.\nThe executive committee is five persons plus two members\nfrom the House transportation committee and one member from the Senate\ntransportation committee.\nIn our case there are five county chairmen serving on that,\nand Ashley is on that for Lowndes County.\n

\nThe Roundtable has elected\n<\/a>\nMayor Travis Parker of Nashville as Chairman,\nand he is the non-voting chairman of the Executive Committee as well.\n<\/blockquote>\nThe state transportation budget is\n$2 billion dollars, of which $1.1 billion is federal funding,\nmostly from gas tax.\nThe state has to match the federal funding, and is getting closer to not doing that.\nThis sales tax was the legislature’s way of handling that.\n
