Reports - County Manager\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/kV7oHPlQwU0\/hqdefault.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kV7oHPlQwU0\">Video.<\/a>\r\nCounty Manager Paige Dukes said that the recent tax assessment notices did not include\r\nexemptions for the new county fire millage.\r\nShe didn&#8217;t say this was because nobody from the County Commission&#8217;s office\r\ntold the Tax Assessor staff to do this,\r\nbut she said corrected notices will go out.\r\nCommissioner Mark Wisenbaker wanted to know what else needed to be done.\r\nIt should all be resolved by early August, after the Commission votes\r\non the fire millage in July.\r\nCommissioner Demarcus Marshall suggested further discussion.\r\nThe Chairman said they had already decided to create the new fire tax district.\r\nThe issue now is tax exemptions to include the new millage.\r\nThe vote in July will be about all the millages, including this one.\r\nCommissioner Marshall still wanted to know if notices were going out \r\nabout something the Commission had not voted on.\r\nThe Chairman said they always went out early so people would time to appeal.\r\nCommissioner Marshall said that was why discussion was needed.\r\nThe new notices will have the fire millage exemption in addition to the usual\r\nhomestead exemption, conservation exemption.\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nCommissioner Mark Wisenbaker wanted to know if the new state Forestry Protection Act exempts ad valorem taxes on timberland, as PCA wanted to know when they called him.\r\nFinance Director Stephanie Black said she would provide information on that.\r\nAlso the Tax Assessors can run a sample on a tract of land upon request.\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nThe Chairman said the incorrect notices were due to a communication failure between the Commissioners&#8217; office and the Tax Assessors&#8217; office.\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nThe County Manager also asked for an executive session to discuss pending or potential litigation.\r\nThey finally did that.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLshUv86fYkiE5lee81K9bCRitJ0llQqVZ\">\r\na LAKE video playlist:<\/a>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLshUv86fYkiE5lee81K9bCRitJ0llQqVZ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<br>\r\nVideos: air conditioning, Insolvent taxes, Fender Road Improvement Project, VLPRA @ Lowndes County Commission Work Session\r\n<br>\r\nVideo by Gretchen Quarterman for Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange (LAKE),\r\n<br>\r\nValdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, June 7, 2021.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-style:italic\">Investigative reporting costs money, for open records requests, copying, web hosting, gasoline, and cameras, and with sufficient funds we can pay students to do further research.
