\nLegalization of drugs in Mexico would not only lead to lowered violence\nand drug consumption but also boost its economy, former Mexican President\nVicente Fox said Wednesday during a speech to a convention of newspaper\neditors from the United States and Latin America.\n

\n\u201cThings are going very badly for Mexico with the issues of organized\ncrime and violence,\u201d Fox said in Spanish. \u201cWe\u2019re losing large\nvolumes of tourists, if not in the interior, then at the border. We\u2019re\nlosing a great number of investments.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nAnd if there were more jobs in Mexico, from tourism and investments,\nthere would be fewer Mexicans trying to sneak into the U.S. for jobs.\n

\nWill legalization cause more drug use? No:\n

\nOn Wednesday, Fox cited the example of Portugal, where he said drugs\nuse has fallen by 25 percent a decade after they were legalized there.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThat would be better than \nlocking up more people for private profit<\/a>\nwhile not<\/em> decreasing drug use, and that’s what we’re doing now.\n
