{"id":2194,"date":"2011-04-13T10:20:30","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T14:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/farm-days-connecting-lowndes-county-and-the-city-of-valdosta.html"},"modified":"2011-04-13T10:20:30","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T14:20:30","slug":"farm-days-connecting-lowndes-county-and-the-city-of-valdosta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/farm-days-connecting-lowndes-county-and-the-city-of-valdosta.html","title":{"rendered":"Farm Days: Connecting Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta"},"content":{"rendered":"Yesterday I wrote\nthat interactions about Valdosta Farm Days between the Lowndes Commmission\nand the City of Valdosta\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/being-proactive.html\">\n&#8220;could have been smoother if one or both of the parties had been proactive.&#8221;<\/a>\nThe VDT reported that the County Commission wants to know\nabout Valdosta Farm Days,\nand apparently there was a disconnect between the staff and the Commissioners.\nHere&#8217;s how the Commission came to be informed, through interactions of citizens and staff.\n<p>\nFirst, an excerpt from the paper paper story by David Rodock,\n&#8220;Farmers market proposal discussed by commission&#8221;,\nTuesday, April 12, 2011, page 3A (it&#8217;s not online):\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nThe Lowndes County Board of Commissioners met Monday morning to discuss\nagenda items that will be voted upon today at its gular meeting, including\nallowing the City of Valdosta too use sidewalks and parking at the old\nLowndes County Courthouse for a local farmers market that will be held\ntwice a month.\n<p>\nGretchen Quarterman, who was in the audience, came forward with additional\ninformation about the county manager&#8217;s proposal.\n<p>\n&#8220;The City of Valdosta has sort of been lusting for a similar program\nthat places like Tifton or Savannnah have been doing for lcal farmers\nand gardeners to have a location to sell their wares,&#8221;\nsaid Quarterman.\n&#8220;They think that it would be an economic driver to bring people\ndowntown on Saturdays.&#8221;\n<p>\nCommissioner Crawford Powell, District 3, said this was the first time\ncommissioners had seen the proposal and he hoped that a representative\nfrom the city would be able to provide more information.\n<p>\n&#8220;We don&#8217;t know a whole lot about this,&#8221; said Powell.\n&#8220;We saw it in the paper that they were trying to announce something,\nbuut we don&#8217;t know who&#8217;s going to be in charge, who will set up or clean up\nthe area, or if the courthouse will be opened to allow\nthem access to power.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n(LAKE has no audible video of the interchange the VDT reported,\nbecause the county&#8217;s sound system wasn&#8217;t working correctly,\nsomewhat to the displeasure of some of the elected Commissioners.)\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lowndescounty.com\/content.asp?pid=23&#038;id=139\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/lowndescounty.com\/content\/government\/c139\/misc\/p%20%20dukes.jpg\"><\/a>\nAfter the Commission work session,\nPaige Dukes (County Clerk) told me she was going to come\nto the previously scheduled meeting of the\nDowntown Valdosta Farm Days at 10AM Monday 11 April 2011.\nI went to Amanda Peacock&#8217;s office to let her know that\nthe Commission wanted someone to come and talk at the Commission meeting Tuesday\nto give them more information about the project,\nand that Paige would be coming to the meeting at 10 o&#8217;clock.\n<p>\nPaige has been invited to all those meetings,\nbut this is the first one she came to.\nShe had a list of concerns from the Commissioners.\nPaige said they were calling out the door as she was\ncoming to the Farm Days meeting to make sure she had a complete\nlist of their concerns.\n<p>\nFrom memory, the Commissioners were concerned that no cooking happen;\nparticularly they don&#8217;t want grease or ice poured on the Courthouse lawn.\nThe Courthouse watering system is not very deep in the lawn\nso they don&#8217;t want any stakes put in the lawn.\nAlso need to be careful about what kind of chairs are put on the lawn,\nso they don&#8217;t dig in.\nThey were also concerned about any litter that might be left behind.\nThe city said they would have their downtown litter collector make\nthat their first pass so that there wouldn&#8217;t be any litter on Monday morning.\n<p>\nAnother concern was who would be in charge of it.\nMara said it would be her, or Amanda, or Ellen.\nMara Register is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostacity.com\/index.aspx?page=54\">\nAssistant to the City Manager.<\/a>\nAmanda is the Manager\nand Ellen is the Program Coordinator at\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostamainstreet.com\/SAMPLE-Contact%20Us.htm\">\nValdosta Mainstreet<\/a>.\n<p>\nStay tuned for what Mara told the County Commission the next day!\n<p>\n-gretchen\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Yesterday I wrote that interactions about Valdosta Farm Days between the Lowndes Commmission and the City of Valdosta &#8220;could have been smoother if one or both of the parties had been proactive.&#8221;
