Though these are\nsurely not the greatest concerns for immigrant communities who would\nbe most impacted if Georgia\u2019s bill is enacted, many business groups\nare anxious. A national boycott of Arizona cost the state an estimated\n$250 million in lost taxes, tourism and other revenue, according to the\nCenter for American Progress.\n<p>\nEven before the Georgia bill passed, a group of organizations across\nthe country threatened to wage a boycott of the state of Georgia if it\nenacts the legislation.\n<\/blockquote>\nMost states that have had this bill introduced have had the good sense\nto get rid of it.\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nThis failure is despite a well-organized and well-funded strategy to move\nmore such bills across the country. Those efforts,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=130891396\">\nas NPR reported<\/a> last\nyear, have involved a national network of state legislators and private\nenterprise, including private prison and immigrant detention companies\nwith clear interests in increasing the number of immigrant detainees.\n<\/blockquote>\nWhat private prison companies?\nThe one most active in Georgia is CCA.\nCCA, which has a\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cca.com\/newsroom\/news-releases\/162\/\">\n&#8220;contract to manage detainee populations for U.S. Immigration and Customs\nEnforcement (\u201cICE\u201d) at the North Georgia Detention Center in Hall\nCounty, Georgia&#8221;.<\/a>\nCCA, which would thus be a direct beneficiary of this new anti-immigrant bill.\n<p>\nA bill that is not yet law, because the governor hasn&#8217;t signed it.\nHall County is where Governor Deal just signed into law another bill\nthat\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/sentence-reform-in-georgia.html\">&#8220;would create a panel to study Georgia&#8217;s criminal justice system with an eye toward overhauling the state&#8217;s tough sentencing laws.&#8221;<\/a>\nHe can get a head start on that by vetoing this new sentencing law.\n<p>\nCCA is the company that wants to build a private prison in Lowndes County.\nHow can the afford the tax dollars?\nHow can Lowndes County afford the social costs?\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Georgia passes anti-immigrant law that benefits private prison companies.
