{"id":2115,"date":"2011-04-27T08:57:48","date_gmt":"2011-04-27T12:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/move-on-find-other-avenues-other-projects-ashley-paulk.html"},"modified":"2011-04-27T08:57:48","modified_gmt":"2011-04-27T12:57:48","slug":"move-on-find-other-avenues-other-projects-ashley-paulk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/move-on-find-other-avenues-other-projects-ashley-paulk.html","title":{"rendered":"Move on, find other avenues, other projects &mdash;Ashley Paulk"},"content":{"rendered":"Ashley Paulk agrees with my mother about\nwhat the Industrial Authority should do.\n<p>\nAt the Lowndes County Commission meeting last night, Chairman Paulk\ndiscussed the biomass plant with Dr. Noll, and said:\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B1jDbV1gEFE\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/i3.ytimg.com\/vi\/B1jDbV1gEFE\/default.jpg\"><\/a>\nCertain people won&#8217;t share it with you, and I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s fair.\n<p>\nWe were approached &#8230; almost three weeks ago by the Industrial Authority\nand we were asked to &#8230; ask them not to extend the contract.\nWell, it&#8217;s not our contract; we could do that, but &#8230; we didn&#8217;t.\n<p>\nAnd then last week the Tuesday of their meeting, I received a call\n&#8230; on my way back fromm Atlanta and they had gone up\nthere to talk to Wiregrass Power,\nbecause they&#8217;d written a letter asking for an extension.\n<p>\nMy understanding was that they asked Wiregrass to write another letter\nto remove that extension request.\n<p>\nThese are things, I think should be public knowledge.\n<\/blockquote>\nThere&#8217;s more in\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B1jDbV1gEFE\">\nthe video.<\/a>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B1jDbV1gEFE\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<br>\n<small>\nRegular meeting of the Lowndes County Commission, Lowndes County, Georgia, 26 April 2011<br>\nVideo by Alex Rowell for LAKE, the Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange.\n<\/small>\n<p>\nHe told me several weeks ago about the commission being asked to vote not to extend.\n\n<!--more-->\nI figured it was up to him to say something in public about what\nthe Commission would do.\nI did publish my paraphrase of what he said then that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/when-the-biomass-plant-is-cancelled-john-s-quarterman.html\">\nthe plant has no business case because nobody would buy the electricity.<\/a>\n<p>\n<p>\nChairman Paulk said he thought Dr. and Mrs. Noll\nhad been ignored by various bodies.\nThen he had some advice for the Industrial Authority.\n<blockquote>\nThis is not the commission talking, this is Ashley Paulk.\nIf they disagree with me, they can say so.\nIt think the facts should be public.\nCertain authorities shouldn&#8217;t be hiding behind us, or other commissions, or anything else.\nThere haven&#8217;t been any plans filed.\n&#8230;\nI don&#8217;t see any way in the world they&#8217;re going to start building\nwithout a permit, because you can&#8217;t get a permit in 30 days.\n<\/blockquote>\nHere&#8217;s one thing he was leading up to:\n<blockquote>\nAnd you don&#8217;t see my agree with John Quarterman very often.\nHe&#8217;s my neighbor and my friend.\nHe stated the other night that his mother said, that when you&#8217;re wrong admit it.\nI think they would be well and it&#8217;s my advice to them publicly,\nmove on, find other avenues, other projects.\n<\/blockquote>\nHe&#8217;s referring to what I said at the most recent VLCIA board meeting,\nwhich was:\n<blockquote>\nMy mother was a schoolteacher for many years,\nRoy Copeland knew her.\nShe used to say, &#8220;it takes a big man to admit it when he&#8217;s wrong.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nLAKE hasn&#8217;t published anything about that, because I didn&#8217;t video\nmyself and we&#8217;ve been waiting for video from another party.\nSo presumably my neighbor Ashley Paulk read about it in the VDT.\nDavid Rodock&#8217;s condensed but correct in spirit VDT version was:\n<blockquote>\nDuring the citizens to be heard portion of the meeting, John Quarterman\nmade a number of suggestions to board members.\n<p>\n\u201cAre you aware that Texas is canceling plans for at least\nthree additional prisons? One has already been closed,\u201d said\nQuarterman. \u201cTexas realized they could not afford to pay for these\nprisons. That money\u2019s gone into rehabilitation, education and prevention\n&#8211; things we could do right here.&#8221;\n<p>\nHe continued, \u201cIf Remerton and Dasher can make meeting minutes public,\nit\u2019s something to consider. My mother used to tell me that it takes\na big man to admit when\u2019s he wrong.\u201d\n<\/blockquote>\nI did mention biomass in the same context, so I&#8217;m guessing my neighbor\nheard more than was in the VDT, perhaps from Crawford Powell, who was\nsitting there at the time in the VLCIA meeting, even though he declined\nan offer by VLCIA Chairman Jerry Jennett to speak a that time.\n<p>\nBack to last night&#8217;s LCC meeting.\nDr. Noll responded to Chairman Paulk\nsaying he would continue opposing the plant\nuntil it was actually cancelled.\nHe discussed the runaround and stonewalling by other government bodies,\nand thanked Chairman Paulk for informing the public.\n<p>\nI think that&#8217;s the right approach,\nas I said\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/what-will-you-do-john-s-quarterman-vcc-7-april-2011.html\">\nat the 7 April Valdosta City Council meeting.<\/a>\n<p>\nAnd I continue to ask what will the activists do when the plant is cancelled?\n<p>\nMeanwhile, one result of all the biomass-related activism\nis that it has meshed with other activism to produce at least this\nkind of actual interaction between the only elected body that\nrepresents all of Lowndes County and its citizens.\n<p>\nImagine that!\nWe might get some transparency around here!\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Ashley Paulk agrees with my mother about what the Industrial Authority should do.
