\r\n\r\nVALDOSTA — The Valdosta Daily Times wants to meet and mingle\r\nwith the public Monday.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nCoffee, Tea and the VDT — an open public forum — is\r\nscheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Holiday Inn and\r\nConference Center, 1805 W. Hill Ave.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nThe town hall-type meeting is open to\r\n\r\n all to come and talk about\r\ncommunity newsgathering.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\n“We are working hard every day to be open and accessible,” said Jim\r\nZachary, editor of The Valdosta Daily Times. “In fact, the newspaper\r\nneeds to be just as transparent as we expect local government to be.\r\nCoffee, Tea and the VDT is the public’s opportunity to ask\r\nquestions, tell us what they think or even just to get to know us a\r\nlittle better.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\n“We love this community and are committed to building and\r\nmaintaining strong relationships. The media has not always been open\r\nand accessible and we are committed to changing that culture. It is\r\nall a part of what we are calling Lifting the Veil, bringing the\r\ncommunity inside the newsroom.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nLifting the Veil includes BudgetLive, a weekly live-streamed news\r\nplanning meeting where the public can participate real time as Times\r\nstaffers plan coverage and newsroom strategies. Editorial board\r\nmeetings are also live-streamed once a month where the public can\r\nsit in on meetings with staff and community members to discuss\r\nissues facing our community.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nA new podcast series, “The Story Behind the Story,”\r\ngives the public a chance to hear reporters and editors talk about\r\nthe reporting and news-gathering process, the reasons behind a\r\nparticular story and the challenges faced by the journalists.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
\r\nThe Video Editorial Series is where the editors sit down and talk\r\nabout the genesis and thoughts behind a particular editorial, often\r\ntimes tackling controversial issues important to the community.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
