\n\n<\/a>\nMay 5, 20011 marks the 6th anniversary of\n\nthe arrest of the Valdosta 15.<\/a>\nIt was the day that 15 of Valdosta’s finest citizens were arrested\nin City Council, charged with “Disrupting a Public Meeting,” and taken to\nthe Lowndes County Jail.\u00a0We were denied bail, and a\u00a0telephone call. And,\nin some instances, medicine.\n

\nThe city spent thousands of dollars on our arrests and appeals. In the\nend, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

\nthat the law under which we were\ncharged was unconstitutional, and the charges were dropped. Barber Park\nwas renamed for John H. Saunders, an African American.\n

\nOn May 5, which just happens to fall on the 6th anniversary of our\narrest, we will return to city council to challenge the city’s policy\nof not allowing citizens to speak directly to their representatives.\n

\nWe will meet at Serenity Christian Church, 1619 North Lee Street,\u00a0at\n4:45 P.M.,\u00a0 talk briefly about why we must challenge the policy, and\nthen motorcade to\u00a0city council. We’re not asking you to do anything,\nbut be there to see how your government works and keeps you in the dark.\n
