(NEIL).\nSo maybe this nuke, only\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/11\/nuclear-reactors-near-here.html\">\n160 miles from here<\/a>,\nwill be staying shut permanently?\nWhat say we do the same for the new nukes at Plant Vogtle,\nonly\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/11\/nuclear-reactors-near-here.html\">\n200 miles from here<\/a>,\nbefore they even open?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nJohn Downey\nwrote for the Charlotte Business Journal,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/charlotte\/print-edition\/2013\/01\/11\/nuke-plant-stymies-duke.html\">\nCrystal River nuke plant stymies Duke Energy<\/a>\nUtility facing penalties, high costs for repairs,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nAfter two mediation sessions, Progress Energy Florida and its\ninsurer haven&#39;t agreed how much of the potential repair costs for\nthe utility&#39;s crippled Crystal River nuclear unit are covered.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt appears all but certain that Progress \u2014 a Duke Energy Corp.\nsubsidiary \u2014 will have to pay millions of dollars as a penalty\nfor failing to make a timely decision on whether to repair the\nplant.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRepair expenses have been calculated at between $1.5 billion and\n$3.4 billion, plus what it costs to buy power to replace what\nCrystal River would have produced while it is being repaired.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nWhat kept shut Crystal River down from 2009 on was\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/info-finder\/reactor\/cr3\/concrete-containment-separation.html\">\na concrete containment separation.<\/a>\nMaybe those\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/vogtle-nuclear-reactor-train-wreck.html\">\nerrors in pouring concrete at Plant Vogtle<\/a>\nare\n\n<!--more-->\nsignificant.\nAt the last reactor permitted before the new nukes at Vogtle,\nin Seabrook, NH, whistleblowers warned about concrete flaws back in 1986,\nbut apparently nobody did anything until last month, 26 years later.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/12\/industrial-park-from-green-grass-to-a-green-solar-future-decatur-county.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3f13854e970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3f13854e970c-pi.jpg\" \/><\/a>\nAustin, Texas, had enough sense back in 1981\nto try to sell out of the South Texas Nuclear\nProject,\nwhich is\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/fire-in-texas-nuclear-reactor.html\">\ncurrently shut down due to fire.<\/a>\nEven TEPCO had enough sense in 2011 to cancel proposed new reactors there,\nalthough it took Fukushima to persuade them.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/austin-energy-changed-from-anti-solar-to-pro-solar-in-one-year.html\">\nAustin went solar in 2003<\/a> and never looked back.\nSo can we.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDo we want to have to write off way more than\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2013\/01\/fire-in-texas-nuclear-reactor.html\">\nthe $331 million NRG did<\/a>\nfor the proposed new South Texas nukes?\nEspecially with\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/southern-companys-three-legged-nuclear-regulatory-capture-stool.html\">\nSouthern Company&#39;s three-legged nuclear regulatory-capture boondoggle<\/a>\nthat means\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/we-can-charge-you-even-if-its-cancelled-cwipped-georgia-power.html\">\nthey can charge us for it even if it&#39;s cancelled?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIf you don&#39;t want an even bigger bill run up for those new nukes,\nnow&#39;s the time to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/03\/separate-cwip-payments-to-georgia-power-wace-call-for-action.html\">\ncontact the PSC and the legislature.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nobody wants to pay to fix Progress Energy&#39;s Crystal River nuke: not PGN, not its new owner Duke Energy, not Nuclear Electric Insurance Ltd.
