{"id":2065,"date":"2011-05-06T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/everyone-agrees-theres-a-problem-with-education-pro-and-con-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html"},"modified":"2011-05-06T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-06T16:00:00","slug":"everyone-agrees-theres-a-problem-with-education-pro-and-con-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/everyone-agrees-theres-a-problem-with-education-pro-and-con-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html","title":{"rendered":"Everyone agrees there&#8217;s a problem with education &mdash; pro and con CUEE @ LCDP 2 May 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"Pretty much everyone agrees there are problems with the two local\nschool systems in this county, those of Lowndes and Valdosta.\n<p>\nProponents and opponents of school unification even agree on many\nof the details.\nThey just don&#8217;t agree on the solution.\nCUEE believes that unification will somehow lead to solutions to all this,\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/rev-george-bennett-speaks-for-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\n<em>believe<\/em> is the word they use,<\/a>\nbecause they have no evidence.\nOpponents such as me\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/this-is-not-representative-of-the-people-john-s-quarterman-on-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\ndon&#8217;t see any plan to get to better education<\/a>, and some think that unification\nwill cause problems that CUEE is not even considering,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/integration-did-not-solve-all-problems-leigh-touchton.html\">\njust like integration did in 1969.<\/a>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s a pair of pie charts from 2008 from\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnersville.net\/education.htm\">\nWho&#8217;s losing in Winnersville?<\/a>\na project unification opponent Dr. Mark George was involved in:\n<p align=\"right\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnersville.net\/education.htm\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" width=\"500\" height=\"322\"  src=\"http:\/\/www.winnersville.net\/images\/VCSLCSpops.gif\"><\/a>\n<p>\nAnd here is a similar comparison\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cueeinc.com\/support-files\/academic_comparison_graphs.pdf\">\nfrom CUEE using data from 2009-2010.<\/a>:\n\n<!--more-->\n<p align=\"right\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cueeinc.com\/support-files\/academic_comparison_graphs.pdf\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\"  src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5262\/5691507475_7a25115822.jpg\"><\/a>\n<p>\nCUEE goes on to detail various other statistics about the two school systems.\n<p>\n&#8220;Who&#8217;s losing&#8221; provides quite a bit of context, including this chart\nthat Dr. George passed out at the 2 May LCDP meeting:\n<p align=\"right\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.winnersville.net\/education.htm\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" width=\"500\" height=\"340\"  src=\"http:\/\/www.winnersville.net\/images\/VCSwhiteflight.gif\"><\/a>\n<p>\nThis graph illustrates that enforced school integration actually led\nto the problem becoming worse, with more segregation now than before.\nSome educational participants from back then, both pro and con unification,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/rev-floyd-rose-quizzes-mrs-ruth-council-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">remember good aspects of the\nformer black schools that were discarded.<\/a>\nAnd the same Chamber of Commerce and real estate industry as we have today\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/camera-2-dr-mark-george-about-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\nmade the problem worse by continually advertising Lowndes County schools.<\/a>\nThese points call into question using integration again, even if it is called\nunification this time, when it failed before.\n<p>\nIt may be satisfying to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/apartheid-dr-lee-allen-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">cry apartheid<\/a>\nand think that resolves the matter.\nBut it didn&#8217;t in 1969 and CUEE itself says that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/will-school-unification-improve-education-cuee.html\">\nunification will not improve education.<\/a>\nBetter solutions are needed.\n<p>\nThoughtful proponents\n(such as\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/out-of-the-patterns-rev-leroy-butler-on-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\nRev. Leroy Butler<\/a>)\nand opponents\n(such as\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/we-dont-talk-about-race-and-inequality-dr-mark-george-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\nDr. Mark George<\/a>)\nof unification seem to agree that the problem is not just in the schools:\nit pervades the larger society.\nBy the problem I mean specifically race, which they discuss in those videos,\nbut also the web of interactions related to education (which we will\ncome back to in another post).\nThere is some anecdotal evidence that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/i-dont-see-a-separation-alex-rowell-about-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">younger folk may exhibit\nthese separations less than their elders.<\/a>\nBut the elders are still part of the web of interactions that reinforces\nthe problems.\n<p>\nI submit that it is the same web of interactions\n<ul>\n<li>\nthat leads to elected and appointed officials\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/because-it-would-be-monitored-robert-yost-via-karen-noll.html\">\nignoring evidence\nof health problems with a biomass plant,<\/a>\n<li>\nthat causes elected and appointed officials\n<a href=\"\/blog\/category\/incarceration\">\nto blithely accept\nthe idea of a private prison in the county,<\/a>\n<li>\nthat unites citizens across the political spectrum in\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/the-mayors-expenses-roy-taylor-vcc-21-march-2011.html\">\ncomplaining\nthat elected officials\ndo not adequately respond to citizens&#8217; questions,<\/a>\n<li>\nthat makes it so remarkable when\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/rev-george-bennett-is-a-big-man-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\none of the old boys breaks the silence\nand tells the people what&#8217;s going on.<\/a>\n<\/ul>\nWe need more transparency and dialog in this community.\nCongratulations to Ashley Paulk and George Bennett for being the big men\nof the month!\nMay many more men and women follow their example.\n<p>\nNo, transparency alone won&#8217;t provide jobs for all.\nBut without transparency, we&#8217;ll get more of the same not enough jobs.\n<p>\nI do applaud CUEE for\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/come-to-the-meeting-mrs-ruth-council-about-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\norganizing a meeting about educational reform.<\/a>\nBut the resulting committee is not scheduled to report back until\n<em>after<\/em> the referendum CUEE wants to schedule on Valdosta\ngiving up its school system charter.\nThus I fear all the well-meaning educators and other citizens\ninvolved in that committee&#8217;s process are merely window-dressing\non an attempt to repeat the mistakes of the 1960s.\n<p>\nI especially fear this when\nCUEE&#8217;s board, which is the body that makes decisions for CUEE,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/this-is-not-representative-of-the-people-john-s-quarterman-on-cuee-lcdp-2-may-2011.html\">\nonly accepts members who fully agree with unification,<\/a>\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/the-cuee-board-not-quite-all-city.html\">\nhas only one member from the county outside the city,<\/a>\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/what-is-the-countys-view-on-consolidation-q-to-cuee-24-march-2011.html\">\ndoesn&#8217;t know and doesn&#8217;t care what the county thinks about all this.<\/a>\n<p>\nIt seems to me the most likely outcome of CUEE&#8217;s committee work is that\nif CUEE&#8217;s board gets a referendum on the ballot and voted yes,\nCUEE&#8217;s board will declare mission accomplished and that will be that.\n<p>\nCUEE is not the solution.\nCUEE is more of the same problem:\na hasty solution promoted by a small self-appointed pressure group.\n<p>\nYes, let&#8217;s have a concerted effort to improve education in the Valdosta\nand Lowndes County school systems.\nFor black students, and for all students.\nGraduation rates at both school systems are not bad compared to\nGeorgia statewide rates, but statewide rates are a joke compared\nto national rates.\nTwo school systems are not the problem: their divergent statistics\nare a symptom of deeper problems.\nDeeper problems including\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/05\/consolidation-wont-be-the-magic-bullet-leigh-touchton.html\">\nlack of jobs for students who do graduate<\/a>\n(more on that in another post).\n<p>\nLet&#8217;s try to find ways to improve education and the entire community.\nBut let&#8217;s not assume before we even do that that a failed attempt from\nforty hears ago will work any better now.\nLet&#8217;s come up with something better.\n<p>\n-jsq\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pretty much everyone agrees there are problems with the two local school systems in this county, those of Lowndes and Valdosta.
