\nOur community could subsequently also “monitor” increases in respiratory\nillnesses, cancer rates, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality\nrates. Just ask the American Lung Association, the American Cancer\nSociety, and the American Heart Association.\n

\nThis is incredible. A city council member who still hides behind an\nEPD air permit, and who chooses to ignore the testimony of thousands of\nmedical professionals throughout the United States. At the same time,\nwe have a City Council that continues to isolate itself from its citizens\nwith a policy that undermines open dialogue.\n

\nThe continued silence of our City Council and Mayor in regard to biomass\nis mind-boggling. Haven\u2019t they noticed the developments of the past\ncouple months? The regular protests? Hundreds and hundreds of signatures\nand voices in opposition to biomass? Ashley Paulk\u2019s statement? George\nBennett\u2019s statement? Even a statement, it appears, by Wesley Langdale\nwho said that biomass is economically not feasible … which is something\nWACE stated as far back as October 2010, supported by an article from\nthe Wall Street journal called \u201c(Bio)Mass Confusion\u201d.\n

\nDr. Mark George once asked all City Council members the following\nquestion: \u201cWhat is it you still need from us, so that you understand\nthat biomass is a bad deal\u201d? To my knowledge that question was never\nanswered.\n

\nLast night I shared a letter from a local physician\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

\nwith the City Council\nand our Mayor. We already received this letter in January, yet decided\nnot share it due to the intense political pressures at the time, to\nprotect the individual from possible repercussions. It is time, though,\nthat our community gets to know another courageous voice:\n
\n\n<\/a>\n\u201cI am opposed to the construction of the proposed Biomass plant in\nLowndes County. The plant has many potential health concerns. This plant\nwould release chemicals and particles into the air that would affect the\nrespiratory health for the citizens in our community. Those most affected\nwould be our children, the elderly and those suffering from lung disease,\nsuch as emphysema and asthma.\n

\nThe long term health effects could be substantial: increased asthma\nattacks, cardiovascular harm and shortened life expectancy. This would\nresult in increased physician and emergency room visits, adding to the\nburden of the already substantial health care costs in our state.\u201d\n
