The\nnext seven generations, the Lakota say, depend upon it.\n<p>\n&#8220;Traditionally, we\u2019re told that as we live in this world, we have\nto be careful for the next seven generations,&#8221; says Loretta Cook. &#8220;I\ndon\u2019t want my grandkids to be glowing and say, \u2018We have all these\nbad things happening to us because you didn\u2019t say something about it.\u2019\n<p>\nPart of this family and spiritual obligation to preserve\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\nthe environment\nfor future generations has taken the shape of renewable energy efforts\nand re-localized Native economies.\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winona_LaDuke\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\"   src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/59\/Winona_duke_dream_reborn.png\/150px-Winona_duke_dream_reborn.png\"><\/a>\n&#8220;If nuclear power is the answer, I don&#8217;t know what the question\nwas,&#8221; LaDuke said recently at a lecture at the University of\nNebraska-Lincoln. &#8220;If you want peace, you need some kind of economy\nbased on justice\u2014not just with the people, but with the natural world.&#8221;\n<p>\nLaDuke and other &#8220;environmental activists&#8221; hope to create that justice,\nthat re-localized economy, through wind and solar energy on Native\nreservations. Locally produced, neither wind nor solar power &#8220;need to\nbe purchased by Halliburton,&#8221; LaDuke says. &#8220;If you\u2019re waiting for the\nguys in Washington to come up with a plan, you&#8217;re going to be waiting\na long time.&#8221;\n<\/blockquote>\nSolar for local self-sufficiency, environmental justice, and you can just do it now.\n<p>\nLaDuke also sees the connection between renewable energy and local food:\n<blockquote>\nMeanwhile, the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, under the leadership\nof Anishinaabeg leaders like LaDuke, is currently a hotbed for Native\nsustainability efforts. Through the White Earth Land Recovery Project, the\nreservation hosts not only a 20-kilowatt wind turbine, but also works to\nsupport weatherization and alternative heating, especially solar panels,\nfor local homes and housing units. Major efforts also have been taken\nby the recovery project to make traditional food sources available on\nthe reservation.\n<p>\n&#8220;Our people spend a quarter of our money on food at Wal-Mart,&#8221; LaDuke\nsaid. &#8220;When you buy from local producers, that money circulates in\nyour community\u2026Food prices will keep going up, so we need to keep it\nlocal.
