encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<br>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lRNLCrqew_k\">\r\nAtlanta Journal-Constitution video 10 September 2017<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>WTXL continued:\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\nThe goal is to prepare Lowndes citizens for potentially rough\r\nweather in weeks to come.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nNext week, people will be allowed to enter the Emergency Operation\r\nCenter to hear the forecast for several named storms that could\r\npossibly impact the area.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nOne of the main features that went over well last year and will be\r\nrepeated this year, is the prep-item table.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIt&#8217;s a physical display of all the items you can buy to help stay\r\nsafe and comfortable when storms hit.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSome background on other preparations by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowndescounty.com\/146\/Emergency-Management\">Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency (EMA)<\/a>.\r\nTerry Richards, VDT, 1 June 2018, \r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.valdostadailytimes.com\/news\/local_news\/lowndes-preps-for-hurricane-season\/article_8fc39fee-c6b7-5da2-995a-f656bf06b79a.html\">\r\nLowndes preps for hurricane season<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote style=\"font-size:100%\">\r\n<p>\r\n&#8230;Members of the Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency met\r\nThursday with local first responders and with a representative of\r\nthe National Weather Service who briefed everyone on storm\r\nprojections, said Paige Dukes, public information officer for the\r\ncounty.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nDukes said 37 agencies that deal with weather emergencies attended\r\nthe meeting.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nValdosta is only about 80 miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico\r\nand is often affected by storm systems in the Gulf.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe National Hurricane Center&#8217;s projection for the 2018 Atlantic\r\nstorm season, which includes the Gulf of Mexico, calls for a\r\nnear-normal to above-normal season, with a 70 percent likelihood of\r\n10 to 16 named storms with winds of 39 miles per hour or higher, of\r\nwhich five to nine could become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or\r\nhigher.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nOf these, one to four could be major hurricanes, category 3, 4 or 5\r\n&mdash; with winds of 111 mph or higher, according to forecasters&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nTropical Storm Alberto already caused\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wwals.net\/2018\/06\/14\/two-sewage-spills-from-tifton-ga\/\">\r\ntwo sewage spills from Tifton, the biggest of 36,000 gallons<\/a>,\r\nand\r\nValdosta\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wwals.net\/2018\/06\/27\/valdosta-spilled-300000-gallons-tuesday-2018-06-26\/\">spilled 300,000 gallons last month<\/a>\r\nwithout even a tropical storm to blame.\r\nSo preparing for a hurricane or tropical storm seems like a good idea.\r\n\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-style:italic\">Investigative reporting costs money, for open records requests, copying, web hosting, gasoline, and cameras, and with sufficient funds we can pay students to do further research.
