\nWhat happened to Plant Vogtle’s new reactor vessel after\n\nit was in a train wreck<\/a> a week ago?\nIt went back to Savannah port and sits there unprotected and unguarded.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the chronically delayed Vogtle\nAP1000 reactor construction project near Waynesboro, Georgia sits\nstranded and seemingly unprotected in the port of Savannah. The\nspecial railroad car carrying the 300-ton vessel had unknown\nmechanical problems on December 15 on exiting the port. The NRC has\nsaid that the vessel only got one-quarter mile before a sound was\nheard and the car stopped. Plans by Westinghouse and Southern\nCompany to move the vessel are unknown. It is also unknown if the\nrailroad car can be repaired and used or if the railroad company\nwhich owns the line is concerned that the rail car might break down\nagain on its line in an in accessible place. Meanwhile, the\napparently unguarded reactor might be subject to sabotage and sits\nin apparent violation of NRC quality assurance and “administrative\ncontrol” regulations.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThe special \u201cSchnabel\u201d car \u2014 its many small wheels\ndesigned to spread out the weight can be seen in the photos linked\nbelow\u2014is sitting just north of downtown Savannah, hundreds of\nfeet from both the Savannah River ship channel and the Talmadge\nMemorial Bridge which spans the river. The area on the rail line\nwhere the rail car is believed to have failed is just outside the\nport area behind a branch office of the Savannah police department\nand between SE Lathrop Avenue and the U.S. Highway 17 approach to\nthe bridge, which looms to the side of the stranded reactor.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
