\r\nThe little-known\r\nLowndes County Thoroughfare Plan\r\ndrives development in Lowndes County.\r\nWith no public notice and no public hearing.\r\nthe Commissioners voted on it Tuesday, April 10, 2018.\r\nProbably you only heard that would happen if you looked at their\r\nagenda late last week,\r\nor you happened to read\r\nwhat I wrote about it Monday<\/a>.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Lowndes<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nObtained through open records request, it’s on\r\n\r\nthe LAKE website<\/a> now.\r\n

\r\nLike the 2009 plan,\r\n\r\n which was the last one I could find\r\n\r\non the county’s website<\/a>,\r\nthis 2018 revision includes a bicycle route map, which is good.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Bicycle<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nIf I’d known in advance they were doing this update, I might have suggested also\r\na water trails map.\r\n

\r\nThe response from County Clerk Paige Dukes noted:\r\n

\r\nThe plan has not been updated since 2009. The “the Thoroughfare Plan has been revised numerous times” statement is referring to the updates that took place prior to 2009.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThe current updates appear to be adding dirt roads<\/a> and speed tables\r\n(speed humps),\r\nand a map of designated truck routes.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Lowndes<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe map of the overall road system does not match the classifications of specific roads,\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Hagan<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nwhich do not match the “Roadway Classifications” table<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Roadway<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nwhich does not match this text on page 2:\r\n

\r\n

\r\nCollectors are designated as roads that convey daily traffic volumes in the range\r\nof 1,500 to 6,000 vehicles per day (vpd).\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nPage 2<\/a> says “Speed Tables — The purpose of speed tables on roads in platted subdivisions….”\r\nBut nowhere does the document say speed tables cannot be installed on other roads in the county.\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Traffic<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThank you County Clerk Paige Dukes and County Engineer Mike Fletcher\r\nfor responding to my open records request within hours, before the Commission voted.\r\n

\r\nI hope further revisions can be made to this plan, for example to fix inappropriate road classifications.\r\n

\r\nMeanwhile, thanks, Lowndes County, for revising the Thoroughfare Plan to make\r\nspeed humps available on all paved roads in the county!\r\n
